Just got in from running a few errands. Coming up on 635 and NorthWest Highway..... guy coming up the on ramp on a black R1/R6 (not sure which bike) was looking back at traffic on the highway. He was wearing a yellow and black icon jacket. I knew what was coming...... He hits it and up comes the front wheel. Just as hes approaching where the ramp and highway meet he sets it downs and goes into a tank slapper and BAM!! bike went spinning and he goes rolling a few times and hops up. He runs to the shoulder. I quickly hit the shoulder and reverse to see if hes ok. He seemed to be. But what cussing up a storm. ( had to LOL inside once i saw him walking fine :o ) Helped get the bike to the shoulder because it was between the ramp and highway, then split before the cops showed up. Didnt leave him alone, lots of other people came to check on him. So if you guys hear from a buddy that wiped out, you know it was him. No one cut him off, he just lost it on his own.
Hate to see anybody go down. But it has been discussed so many times. Nobody to blame but himself. There was nobody near him to have cause it. I know that particular on ramp is always dusty from the construction and crap that always goes on there.

lol at "No one cut him off, he just lost it on his own." Admission of guilt, or do idiots on bikes make up excuses when they fuck up and lay it down?

LOL ........ yes you know what I mean. Kind of like when somebody bitches and moans about getting a speeding ticket. Or gets mad at the cop. When in actuality nobody made them speed. But not all who ride bikes are idots and dont take accountability for their actions ;)

About this time last year a friend was commenting on me not having a steering damper on my bike.
I was telling him that bike (05 600RR) had been really good in the hill country (where I had been living for a few years) and I didn't think it even needed a damper. It had never been prone to shaking out in the hill country on less than ideal roads that were much curvier than anything in the Dallas area.
I left his house, wheelied past a friend who was in his F-250, and it got a head shake as soon as I set it down. I wasn't even going fast. Cruising maybe 60ish mph.
I was less than a mile from my buddy's house and really thought I was going to be eating my words and the pavement LOL.
I just got lucky and was able to grab the bars back and get it straightened out as I was going off the shoulder.
I put a scotts on it a couple days later. I'm not sure what happened. It was dark and maybe I hit something when I set it down. Seemed like the bars were straight, who knows??? I put a damper on it and never had trouble with that bike again.

Ans what many riders don't realize, is you don't need to be stunting to need a damper! Uneven roads, railroad tracks, etc can all cause a tank slapper. I think ALL sportbikes need a damper and frame sliders/cage, for safety and protection.

once i was doing a whoolie while i was a bit tired and I set the front end down cross .
It went into a crazy tank slapper .; i practically shit my pants thought for sure at one point i was about to get tossed right off it was so violent.
then it just smoothed off and I went on my merry way. It felt like the ocislations (spic) went from the front to the back.
<---paying better attention to the front wheel from now on.
I gotta agree though most any bike street/dirt needs a damper if you ask me. Doesn't hurt IMO.

funny thing is, that the three post in this that talk about tank slap, all happen after doing a wheelie. Lay off the stunting, and your issues will be cut down dramatically. I ride every chance I get, but do not do any stunting. I like my bike in one piece, my skin on my body, and being able to put the bike up after a ride, and have it ready to ride the next day. I get it can happen even if I am not stunting, but most of the time, it comes from one stunting, and not only that, you put the public at risk when you do it. Keep it in the parking lots set aside for that crap.

I remember you telling me the story the other night Jesse. Glad no one was hurt seriously.
I had a tank slapper occur one time while accelerating and hitting a small (but somewhat wide) speed bump. Scared the shit out of me but I got it under control right away.

Yeah, I felt for the guy to a degree. Still say he knew the risk. But besides the shitty location....... it was windy as all hell that day. My truck was moving some from the cross winds.

I am sure he is telling his buddies that "a friend wrecked the bike." People say that shit all the time when they come and buy new plastics for their bikes here at the shop. What's even funnier is when they come in with massive amounts of road rash or a limp and still say their "friend" wrecked the bike.

In nearly 10 years or riding I've had a few tank slappers and the previously mentioned one was the only one as the result of a wheelie.
I suppose I could sell my sportbike and get something with a less agressive rake, more flexible frame, and softer suspension. I could also follow all the rules of the road to a T,but where's the fun in that?
Different strokes for different folks.
Honestly though, sometimes I want to give up street riding all-together. I'm not worried about what I will do. What scares me are drunks, teenagers, elderly people, road rage types, cell phone users/texters etc. I've just been thinking about the dumb shit some people I know have done. In the last two months I've known two people that have caused multi-car accidents while jacking with their iphones.
Who wants to sponsor my racing effort??? :D

Often times the wheel will slip when trying to regain the speed at which you set it down. It loses traction for that split second smokes the tire a little which sometimes leads to a nasty tank slapper.

I hear what your saying. I seriously doubt any one of us here follow every traffic law. I bought mine as well for the speeds they are capable of. I dont however speed everywhere I go. Its just nice knowing its their when I want it. :p Im just saying that when some people screw up, it seems that its never their fault. Whether it be a speeding ticket... cops fault. In the case of this wreck.... it was the bikes fault. At least the way he was cussing at it, sure seemed like the blame was on the bike.
What ARH said about the smoke.......... unfortunately I have only rocked about 2 decent wheelies long enough to get that :( :o
