Looking to get my first atv and I need some help. Im not gonna buy anything new (yet), just need an idea of what to get.
All I know is I want a sport style like a 400ex, banshee, etc. Currently just have a dirtbike now.
Im trying to get something else to take with me when it gets warm again so my wife or me :D can ride.
A little help.
What should i look for?
Not looking to spend over 3 grand.

Not sure what you are looking for...
But I've got a 2003 Polaris Predator 500 that I would let go for $3k.

I would stay away from the 2 strokes (banshee, quadzilla's, etc) and get a used 4 stroke. Then after you get the basics you can look at getting a cool banshee to mod after get a good idea of what your getting yourself into. I like 2 strokes but they are very finnicky IMO. They either run like a bat out of hell or run like crap. Just look for a good 4 stroke, I like the Honda's and Yammys myself. Honda proving to be a bit more reliable and yammys a bit quicker but not much.
My vote goes for Honda TRX-450R or Yamaha YFZ450. The older 450R's were kick start though so if your ok with that then cool, otherwise look for a newer 450RE with electric start. I prefer kick so I dont get stranded out in the middle of no where with a dead battery but thats just me.

Push starting a fourwheeler is a piece of cake. I like once with elec. start and a backup pull/kick starter.
You want a manual or automatic? I like my Raptor but wish it was an auto sometimes. You could get on a Raptor 660 pretty easily with your budget.

I recently bought and sold my first quad, and loved it. It was an 03 400ex that had plenty of power and was easy to ride. Parts are readily available and fairly cheap, and there are used ones all over the place in your price range.
If you're looking for an automatic, look at the 300ex.
In my opinion, the 500 raptor and bigger bikes might be too aggressive for a first-timer and/or your wife.
Good luck.

Get a KFX700R. This is my second one because after selling the first and riding a Raptor and Grizzly I realized how much I liked the auto with sport suspension. This one is decked from top to bottom and I cant imagine riding anything else. Although I wouldnt mind trying a Wolverine 450 or a Renegade 800. You can pick up the KFX's really reasonable too and they have been in production for a while.

That looks like a pretty good deal for $2,300...might take it home for $2k!
Just beware that tires are pretty expensive (budget up to $600 installed) and I found them to wear quickly...but I rode mine fairly hard.

i LOVED my banshee but lason's right it was super finnicky and wanted to be worked on all the time. it was a beast, though. 377cc's, billet cool head, tumi 5's, stage IV intake and carb setup, GYTR skid, renthal bars, bigger sprockets, resivoir shocks, +8" out back and +4" up front, chrome a arms, etc etc etc.
it was fun, but really only at the dunes.

Sneaky's opinions are simply biased.... OK well his machine is pretty nice I have to admit. I'd look on CL with the condition of the economy I bet there are some good deals to be found out there right now.

I bought my fiance a little 2004 Suzuki DRZ 250 - Its a peppy little 4 wheeler with the semi- auto clutch, meaning you still shift the gears but you dont have a clutch and if they forget to down shift when slowing, it won't stall. She loves that thing and has gotten really comfortable on it.

Perhaps you could have called someone that you know in the motorcycle/ATV business for his opinion? Just a thought.
And please tell me that you do not plan on riding 2 up on the 4 wheeler with you and your girl!

Figured you was busy with that new hatchback of your's. :D
Mainly buying one so when i go ride the dirtbike, she can go too. Or whoever wants to chip in on gas can ride it.
Whats you opinions?

The game warden/marshall at Lake Murray rides around on a Gator writing tickets to people doing this now.

He sure does, it's illegal there. I don't think it is in Texas though.

Why would you get a ticket that is perfectly fine to do. I assume this is being done on sport bikes or the smaller bikes. I've got a CanAm and it'll fit 3 people. Maybe there's something I don't know?

I would get something around a 250 or a 350. Honda and Yamaha both make these models. They are a manual transmission but shouldn't be too hard for her to drive. Now then, if this is an excuse for you to buy a 4 wheeler for yourself, I would get the KFX700. It's really fast and you don't have to shift gears. She could ride it too.

Legally you can not ride 2 up on an ATV unless the ATV is designed for that. This is extremley dangerous and I have seen alot of customers hurt riding ATV's this way. And riding 3 up on an ATV that is just stupid. You are asking for a broken neck or other serious injury.

It's a state law in Oklahoma now. If it's not designed for 2 people then you can't ride with 2 people on it, legally at least.

Didn't see the part about not being in Texas. Reading pwns me! I ride 3 up on mine all the time around the neighborhood. Nothing extreme for sure. Just the kids and me.

When I see ATV laws, I think of Barbara Walters and her 20/20 story that killed the 3 wheeler industry. She had one on a hill and they pushed it over to show how easy they can tip...lol. dumb bitch.

Very well put!
I prefer banshees over all, however, I only ride in the sand, And I mod the fuck out of em!
I would go with a YFZ 450 if I had to go FOUR stroke. Or,. IF I had the bread, A KTM
