View Full Version : Bike ramp

I am looking for a ramp to put my Supeglide (630 lbs) into the back of my F250. The problem is that the distance from the ground to the tailgate edge is kind of high making the loading angle steep. Every ramp that I have looked at is just to short. I could probably make it up the ramp but backing down would be tough. Anybody have any ramp recomendations for heavy bikes/cruisers. I found one in a catalog but it was over $500 with shipping. I have been carrying it on a trailer but there are times I would like to take the bike but the trailer is full of other stuff (like falcons and Mustangs).

I use the ramps I made for my mower. They are the rampparts that you add 2x12's to and they atach to your tailgate or trailor. Mine are only about six feet long so the angles are steep. But if you made them 8 to 10 feet they would work better (thats what I plan on doing). I just run some 2x4's across the bottom of the two ramps to make one and ride right up into the truck. Getting down is a bit tricky though because the ramp is only 24" wide.I just put two 2x6's on each side of the ramp and use those to put my feet on. Probally not the best way but it was really cheap.

Thats what I have now, two 8ft long 2x12's with the ramp brackets. It just does not seem safe enought to back down a $12,000 bike. I could do it but sooner or later I would lose it coming down or up and then I would be pissed that I did not spend a few hundred bucks for a decent purpose built ramp.

You could always mount a winch in the bed and pull the bike up. Pull it in backwards and it'd be easy to ride down the ramp.

They showed one on Trucks! that was pretty neat but I cant find a web site. The entire truck bed was on a hydraulic system. The whole bed would come off of the truck and lay flat on the ground behind the truck. Then you drove the bike into the bed and tied it down. You hit a button and the entire bed plus bike was lifted back onto the truck. Said it had a payload capacity of 1100lbs.

Lots of great suggestions. Turns out I had discount ramps in my favorites file. Lots of nice choices there but still approaching $500 for what I need.

I saw that one. That's a little over $400. I guess I am just falling into the budget sydrome (go fast on a budget). There was one even cheaper that would work. I was saving up for a new exhaust, CAI and ECU controler for the Glide but I would like to take the bike with me on trips without dragging my 16 ft trailer along. Probably get the ramp first. Thanks for the link.

Thats what I did, for my four wheeler...
2" box tubing and a $70 winch, mounted it to the front tie down points in the bed, works great every time.
Ill see if I can find a picture...

you could also look into the receiver mounted carriers. i think Northern tool caries a few the are not that expensive.

I think most of those are only rated at 4-500lbs though arent they?

They are good for dirt bikes and such but try and load a Harley Davidson in one! Plus you are right about the rating. I know a guy that carries a Triumph Bonneville on the back of his motorhome and has a carrier custom made for it but even it weighs under 500 lbs.. Even if it would work I couldn't pull my car hauler or travel trailer behind.

The way I transport bikes is load them sideways on a 18ft flatbed car hauler.
Can carry 10 electra Glides or 14 Crotchrockets.
When I put big bikes in the bed of my truck I strap the ramp down on the tailgate and ride the bike up on the trailer then ride it from the trailer to the bed.
Diff story when the steering is locked.
Pm me if you want more advice.

Got to look at one of these at Thunderbird Harley in Albuquerque. They cost $2900 or so. It looked like one could fab one of these up for a few hundred bucks + a small winch mounted in the forward part of the bed. Not much to them really.
There have been some great suggestions on my problem of carrying the Glide while pulling a travel trailer or loaded car hauler. I will just get a ramp of some sort by Spring.

I had looked at these earlier but the capasity per ramp is 600 lbs. Warning on their site says "not for heavy bikes". More than likely they would work but I would always wonder if they were about to drop an expensive bike on the pavement.

I have loaded and unloaded my bike by myself several times, granted it is 200 pounds lighter than yours. I usually just park my truck on a incline so the back is as low as it can get and in the bike goes. Dont worry yourself to death over loading your bike.
The best permanant bike lift I have seen is when I purchased my bike @ the dealer they had an in floor hydraulic lift. I just drove the bike over this metal plate and they raised the entire bike upto my truck level and I drove it in.

Well, I probably am worrying to much about it. Loading is not as much of a problem as unloading (backing down). I also have a Goldwing that I would be loading until I decide to sell it. I have some 8 ft wooden ramps that would work if I braced them up a bit it just does not offer much width. As soon as I finish a few other things I think I will fab one up similar to the Jetraxx that was posted earlier. I picked up a remote actuated winch the other day and I just need to set down at the drawing board and figure it out. Shouldn't cost much to do it. In the meantime I think I will buy one of the 9ft long 40" wide Blackwidow ramps from discount ramps. I travel a lot and I would like to be able to load and unload anywhere anytime without searching for curbs, inclines, or other aids that I have used in the past instead of having the right tool.

Finally got the black widow bike ramp. Not the best one they have but a good one. 10ft long and 48" wide. It has to be joined together to hold over 600 lbs. I tried it with just the wide middle ramp and it flexed enough for me to back down quickly and not try that again.
I also measured Big Pappa Pumps winch ramp and I may try to build one of those this summer as soon as I get my shop back in functioning order. I would like to be able to just drive up to a chock and then push a button, an it sucks it up in the back of the truck. I guess I am getting lazy. Anyway, another trip to New Mexico and this time with the bike. WooHoo!
