i am new to long range so i would not impress anyone. probably start aroun 200 yards with the ability to get longer.
i would like to be able to find ammo fairly easily
.308 is easier and cheaper to get ammo for

Remington 700 or Savage 110 in .308 or .30-06. The Savage can be had pretty cheap, and is a great gun (remington is too but cost a little more). Both have an assload of parts available to upgrade as your budget allows. You can buy a Stevens (which is a lower line Savage) and build a good rifle off of it.

.338 win mag.
ammo avail at walmart.
it will reach out and touch.
not as flat as .308, but has more energy and can take bigger game at distance.

depends on the deal, 260 is a good deer cartridge. M77 are good rifles, burris pretty good also.

.270 is a better long range gun than the ones mentioned above.

Do you plan on using this to hunt or to shoot competition? Are you designating this rifle for 4 legged game or will it be 2 legged thin skinned game with ceramic trauma plates? If it's for the later, I'd probably go with a Rem 700 Sendero in .300 winmag. Or a 700 PSS if you can find it. I also like the Winchester model 70 LAredo. the .300 winmag should take down any game on the North American continent(that being 4 legged and 2 legged) but .308 isn't a bad choice in any of those rifles. :D

Remington 700 in .308, 30-06 or 300 win mag. Endless possiblitys for upgrades, very accurate out of the box, and you can get those rounds anywhere in time of "need" :) .308 and 30-06 for 100-600 yards, 300 win mag for the longer shots

If you can find a heavy barrel 700 in any of the above calibers ...all you need is a good trigger and some handloads worked up for your rifle. It will EASILY shoot under .5 moa if you do your part. My 300 Win Mag Pss has a worked stock trigger, leopold scope and really nice handloads...ragged 1 hole groups all day long at 100.

if you want it for hunting and are going to be walking much you don't want a heavy barrel; they are fine for stand hunting but are way too heavy if you move around much or go hunting in a mountainous area. the extra accuracy of the heavy barrel is no good if you can't hold it steady....

thats why my remington 700 has a 20" bull barrel cuts down big time on the weight,.

well the 6.5 grendal or 6.8 spc may be a bit too exotic since you pretty much have to reload for them or spend a fortune on ammo.
I would pick the .300 whisper for the two-legged game, hehe...

Keep checking with CDDN investments. They get in the barreled actions fairly often and have the cheapest price around.
