Which kit offers the greatest affordability and quality? I need to get my ass in gear and start building one.

When you buy a 'kit' what other parts do you need?

Del-Ton kits are really cheap and they use Wilson barrels, which I hear are pretty good. I just bought this kit, and all I need to finish it out is a stripped lower receiver. Those can be had for anywhere from $100-$250.

My entire rifle will cost me ~$650 once I can get my hands on a lower receiver.

After you buy the upper kit the only part you should need is the lower receiver...maybe some lube like CLP. A good punch set is needed to drive the pins into the receiver as well. Model1sales.com is local and pretty cheap I ordered mine about a month ago. the guy told me they were busy as hell and I still had it in about a weeks time.

If you want to finish a stripped lower, you will need the rifle kit. It comes with everything except the stripped lower.

An Upper kit (haven't seen any specifically called this) probably wouldn't have the trigger group, buttstock, pistol grip, safety, etc(lower parts)...I envision these as the upper receiver, barrel, gas tube, handguard, front sight base, flash hider, bolt carrier group and charging handle.

but, yeah, del-ton has great prices and are fully customizable. Model1Sales seems to be in line with Del-ton for prices, but don't seem to offer the same flexibility. Reason I say this is I have a Stag lower that I put a CMT LPK in. I only need a complete upper and a buttstock to finish the build. Del-ton will allow me to delete the LPK from the kit, thereby saving me about $30. On the other hand, I will be aquiring another stripped lower or 5 and will need more LPKs, so I may still pay the additional $30 to have another LPK ready to go...

sorry i needed to elaborate a little better, i didnt order an upper kit, I ordered a model1sales.com varmint rifle kit, it was complete except the lower receiver for 535.00 also including a lower parts kit, buttstock etc...so far very reliable i've put about 200 rounds in it.

Don't these need to be 18" to be legal in Texas?

Are there certain areas I should spend the extra money (chrome lined barrel, and so on)?

And will any lower work?

16".

You can have a shorter barrel as long as the barrel + "permanently attached" flash hider are longer than 16".

ie. a 14.5" M4 upper with a permanently attached 1.5" flash hider.

If the barrel is longer than 16" the flash hider can be removable.

This is my first build, but from reading around I decided to get the chrome lined barrel. It is supposed to make it more durable and easier to clean. I also got M4 feed ramps, but I don't think they are necessary. Something about the cut supposedly makes them feed better (see link below).

I don't want to give you the blowoff "Go check out AR15.com" but I have read this thread as well as most of the links just to get a general idea. Very helpful.

Too late, but they're only gonna get higher once the Beloved Leader takes his oath of office.

I'm about to order a Model 1 Sales EM-4 kit and they say all it needs is a stripped lower to complete theirs. The prices are very reasonable and they are somewhat local.

not to be a smart ass but, with the current price spikes on uppers, lowers, magazines and just about all parts, you might be better off just going to Academy and buying a Bushmaster off the shelf... it will give you a base rifle and you'll still be able to change whatever you want...

I could be wrong but I dont think the prices will go down much, if at all, before Obama takes office... Just a thought...

Reality is that no AR should be more than $400.

Beyond the obvious right now, why were they so high before the election?

I have a ? can you buy a 14.5" upper and have it shipped to your house and you permanently attach the flash hider or am I stuck shipping it to a FFL and having a gun smith permanently attaching it for me?
