what is a good rifle(manu and caliber) to use for deer hunting...and occasional hog. i am getting into a position at work where i get to take clients out, and being oilfield related they all want to go hunting this time of year. so im thinking about buying a rifle in the next couple months so come this time next year i will have everything ineed to take them.

Remington 700 .308
For a lot of brush and less than 100 yards a 30-30 is good.
A 243 is great for youths too.

I'd stick to something very common for the first, 30-06 would be ok but it doesn't do much the .308 won't and the 30-06 kicks quite a bit more.

I'm about to purchase a Browning x-bolt 7mm wsm in a few weeks. I have been using a 7mm mag for years now and love the round. It has brought down everything I have shot with it. I'm looking forward to giving the short mag a try.
depends on if you are in thick brush or not if you are anything with .30 will work anything smaller and you can risk hitting anyhting as small as a twig will trow even a .243 off i would say at least a .30-30 if not a .308 just for all around and this is not BS i hunt with a .30-06 so a .308 should be the compromise

.30-06 is what I use.....
Supposedly it can down black bear and where I go there are black bear. So, don't necessarily buy for what you're hunting - also buy for what you might stumble across. Just my paranoid way of thinking.

I shoot a .308, and have never had a deer run.....I've had pigs go a little ways, then topple.
Although, like was posted above, a 270 will handle anything in Texas, so that's probably a pretty safe bet.
On a side not, I'm going to build myself a 25-06 after first of the year, hope to have good things to say afterwards.

.270 if you are staying in TX. Anything larger could cause a loss of meat. Not a huge fan of venison so I'm thinking about picking Barrett 82A1, just in case I stumble upon a 3000yard shot:D

Lmao, at 3000 yards wouldn't know if you were shooting at a deer, hog or bushes. Plus thats a long fucking way to walk to go find something after shooting it.

The longest shot I've ever taken was around 600 yards for an antelope. Saw the dirt fly about 3yards behind the damn thing. A bit higher and he would have ate the dirt.
I figure, no matter what you hit, if you hit something after 1000 yards they should give more credit than shit:D

I popped a cyot at around 500 yards once. After sitting in stand all morning and not seeing anything I spotted that bastard and said fuck it and went for it.I didn't hit him exactly where I was aiming but still dropped him with one shot. I don't think I would have gone for a deer at that range just for the fact that I have never practiced any shots pass 200 yards. After I get my new rifle and scope I'm going to start working on long shots.

like above, 308, 30-06, 270....I'd avoid the 303 as it isn't as easy to find ammo for in out of the way places. 30-30 isn't good for long shots cuz the trajectory sucks.
Remington model 7 in 308 with Leupold scope is my favorite deer rifle. It is basically a lightweight model 700. Winchester, Ruger, Savage are all good. Browning, Sako etc better ;) but more $$$$

The .308 is a great round and the 700 platform is hard to beat. You will have tons of ammo choices. Break your gun in right and find a load that it likes to shoot and you will be fine. IF you ever plan on going after large game ( Moose/ ELk) I'd definitely end up with a .300winmag also. My .02

Agreed. The 30-30 is a great gun under 100 yards.

Its a steal at that price especially if it has the accu-trigger set up...

I generally use the following:
.308 Win (150grain Winchester Ballistic Tips)
.223 Rem (60grain Federal Nosler Partition)
.30-30 Win (150grain Winchester Soft Points)
With that said, I like the .308 the best, I like the .223 (But it's all about bullet placement), and .30-30 is a classic.
With the price of hunting ammo lately, this year I switched from my .308 to the .30-30 as my primary hunting gun. Go look at the cost of ammo, my god, they want 30-40 dollars a box for .308, they want 25-30 dollars a box for .223 Rem, and I can get .30-30 ammo cheap still. I just bought 3 boxes of 30-30 ammo at Dicks Sportings Goods for 18 dollars total and I sent off for the 15 dollar winchester ammo rebate. So in essense I paid 3 dollars for 3 boxes of ammo. I sighted in my old 30-30 this weekend and the scope is now dead on with the new ammo. I should have enough ammo to last a good 3-8 years. (Depending on how many deer I shoot).
A 30-30 will shoot great up to about 150 yards or so, but from my feeder to my deer blind is about 75 yards so it does wonders.
If ammo costs are a concern, go get a 30-30 (In my opinion).

hey bill,
this is justin hey i shoot a 270 wsm the ballistics on the bullet smokes a normal 270.
i use 130 gain tip and i haven't had anything run over ten yards from were i hit the deer or pig. i love it. my other buddy used it one time and he like it so much he gave his 270 browning to his son so that he could get a 270 wsm. the one i hve is a savage it was about 395 i think without a scope. go to jack-o-pawns on hwy 80.
give me a call i let you come by i'll let you see mine. 903-399-5033
