If I was to go and try to find an .308/7.62mm AR what all do I need to watch out for. Any thing diff about the larger caliber gun as far as stuff to stay away from when purchasing an AR rifle?
That or a M1A1 from Springfield.... hmmmm.

Good luck on finding one. I have spoken to 3 dealers in our area today and was told best case is a 2 year back order at this point. Everyone sold everything they had at the gun show two weeks ago and can't get anything else!

Check out SOG Amory.
I saw they had a couple at the Big Town show this weekend. Not sure what they wanted, but they were high as hell on everything else they had.

Just wait for the gunshow this weekend. I met alot of contacts at the bigtown gunshow and scored alot of lowers this week myself. There is a little price gouging going on but most are only raised by $50-100 from the people ive dealt with.

The complete lower was almost $700 and then they wanted right at $1k for what I believe was a used upper! Thanks!

You could get a Kel tec RFB carbine.
They'll cost about as much as an AR-10, and bullpup at that.
Good luck getting one anytime soon as well though...They are just being released in December
I like AR-10's but they just feel way too big to me. I hope the bullpup will be nice, 3yrs in the development. Just go pickup an AR-10, it's like an AR-15 with twice as wide of a receiver. To me it just takes away the handiness of AR's too much once it gets to be that size and weight. But hey, I'm just a short guy who likes .308....

If I remember correctly SOG had a completed lower for 749.99 on their table.
As being someone who owns a .308, On reflection I would not want to pay so much damn money just to be able to pay so much more money for ammo - might want to think about that. 7.62x51 is just about twice as much as 5.56.
I'd hunt down a nice CETME if I couldn't find an AR-10. They're pretty good guns, all told.

precisely what I was thinking of recommending to him as well, I have one and they are very fun to shoot, just try to get one in good condition. Much more simple of a design than the AR, and with the omission of a few minor differences, the same as an H&K G3 (which is actually a clone of the CETME).
you can find good specimens around 500-1000, sometimes less if you know how to repair them - I was able to pick one up for 200 bucks which needed a little machine work on the trigger group.

This gun isnt in production yet. I talked to a lady at Texas Star Group in The Colony and apparently they have a hook up on RRA stuff. They have someone on the inside that told them that RRA won't be starting production on them again until May 2009 and there is currently a 3 year back order on this gun and any variant that RRA will make.
RRA started a production run of them, but found something wrong in the tooling. They bought the tooling from Bushmaster, but had to stop production b/c of an issue they had. They were only able to produce a few guns and sent out what they could.
The lady from TSG said that they received only 4 guns (only a portion of what they had ordered) that had been on order since 2005 and sold all 4 at the last gun show in Ft Worth in less than 10 minutes after opening the show. The real kicker is that they sold for $1200 each!! I want one in the worse way right now, but you absolutely can't get them from RRA b/c they aren't out there anywhere!

If you get a CETME, try to get a cast reveicer instead of stamped... unless you don't want optics and will be sticking to the iron sights.
Also, you need to run surplus mil spec brass through it, not off the shelf .308 Winchester or anything. The weaker commercial stuff will expand, especially in the neck area... but the extractor WILL pull out the bottom of the case, even if it means ripping the neck off and leaving it in there. It can sometimes take a special tool to get it out.
They also use a delayed roller blowback system instead of the gas operated systems of the AK, AR, etc.
And don't shoot Indian surplus!
Anyway, my stamped receiver caused me all sorts of trouble. I ended up selling the gun.
Buuuuuuuut, it was fucking fun and threw brass further than anything else I've owned. :D

I heard that CETMEs were going for $800 for a used one in fair condition the last gun show.

If .308 wasn't so damn expensive, I'd buy a Springfield SOCOM rifle. Military Gun Supply has a cool one, but I just bought 2 Stag M4 ARs and don't have an extra $1,800 laying around.

You don't shoot varmints with .308, they disappear! ;)

The issues with the stamped receiver are all attributed to needing a little more gunsmithing, as was the issue with the CETME I purchased. After being machined properly, it shoots fantastic. I don't necessarily think stamped receivers are any less dependible than cast, and I think everyone will agree cast receivers look like shit.
As for the price, there was a very nice (brand new looking) Century CETME at the gun show I saw sunday for sale @ $500 - looked like it had only been fired a few times.

Ive made about 70 phone calls today and it seems i cant even find an ar10 for myself. I heard there will be a few at the gunshow but they will be in the 2500 plus jacked up price range.

Fuck that. That's FN SPR money. I refuse to pay more for less gun, and there are bolt-gun .308's that'll shoot circles around any AR-10 on the planet.

Remington wants 1400 for their R-25. Several calibers available.
I think they own DPMS, but not sure DPMS is making them.
M1 starts at 1400 for the basic model. Going into a Loaded or a SOCOM is 1600-1800. A National Match is 2k.
