When ronnie took office they immediately released the hostages. Afraid of getting the shit bombed out of themselves apparently.

The misery index was a measure of how bad the american public saw the economy.

Nixon ran on a platform to end the war. LBJ had previously bankrupted the country with Great Society deficit spending and war deficit spending. The banking industry was loaning money based on gold that the government was supposed to keep in stock but didn't.

The result was the end of Bretton-Woods, an empowered fed, wage and price controls and a hostile congress that pretty much stymied the efforts in Vietnam.

You could wrap Carter in that too, he didn't help matters.
