a result of the "new" demographic here in the US, with increased hispanic and black voters? Has the white voter now become irrelevalant?

Not a racial post, just interested in opinions and the changing demographic in the US.

The hype carried well with young voters and they became mobile. This hurt the McCain campaign. If Obama hadn't carried the "young" vote I think the race issue wouldn't have made as much of a difference but with 600,000 newly registered Democrats he became a force to be reckoned with.

This electoral college stuff is complete horseshit. That's what makes people's votes not count. If it were about the popular vote we wouldn't be having this conversation.

I agree! I think the Electoral College is antiquated. It was a logistics requirement in the past but with information crossing the world in fractions of a second I think it is quite possible to allow each and every vote to be counted and popular vote determine the president.

this has been debated for the past 60 some odd years. my grandfather debated this in junior high.

but i agree with you, with technology today it wouldnt be hard at all to count every vote independaently and rely on a majority to pick.

I'm seeing it as more of a 'grassroots' movement then anything else.

Yes and no.

Obama did a remarkable job getting into key communities and getting people registered and motivated to actually vote. He basically copied Karl Rove's schematic for George Bush 2000.

There was record minority turnout at the voting booths. That's pretty substantial and evident of a monumental change in our society.

However, I am one of those ever growing people that feel that the Republican party will one day become extinct. The reason being the massive influx and growth of minority voting groups. That and the statistics that are showing a change among white voters gradually moving towards progressive politics. The voting trends are showing a gradual drop off of Republican percentages over the last few decades.

The white vote is not irrelevant as it is what made Obama the 44th President. However, I think that after tonight that minority groups will have a sense of empowerment with tonights success. I think over time we will become less crucial as the minority populations grows.

I think in the very near future the America that most of us know will become unrecognizable. Old school values will be lost on the new generation.

All of this may become moot anyway. We now will have a radical leftist liberal with a shady past in the White House. Iran and other rogue countries will probably just end up exploiting our tree hugger President at some point down the road. I believe that after tonight we are no longer safe.

I'm starting to believe in Denny's end of the world rhetoric. I do now believe our days are numbered.

That is a scary thought.

You know, the end of most democracies is when the people realize that they can vote themselves money from the government.

I will pray everynight for the next four years that America will see today as a mistake and undo what has been done because without that happening I fear for the "America" my son will inherit and that makes me want to cry.

No whites still make up 74% of the general U.S. population.

I just put my girls to bed and felt sick. This really is a big damn shame.

You going back to the desert? Wonder how many AWOL cases there will be? Suppose by 2010 we'll be facing a draft?

He is going to pull everyone out. I pity the Iraqi people, I hold those that made the ultimate sacrifice in the highest reguard and don't believe that they died for a "mistake", and I question my ability to serve with him as commander in chief. The US will be a military weakling when he is done. The money for all these programs has to come from somewhere and Defense is about to get hit hard. Displaced veterans are going to drive the unemployment through the roof, etc. It is going to be a snowball.

America is not in the end of days. So, America has become irrelavant in the world before the end of days.

No, it is the increase in the votes under 30. A 17% increase over past elections this year. Majority of them voted straight democratic.

as far as turn out

hispanics stayed about the same, whites decreased by 2%, blacks increased by 2%. This was reported on channel 8 earlier.

Insightful post. I agree with you on what you say about change in values. Will it be as bad as you say? I don't think so. Education and the ease at which the general population receives information is changing this country drastically.
The more we know will always make us a better country.

Access to information does not equate to knowledge. The information is skewed in both directions depending on your source. Most people believe what they read/hear from the media at face value and don't dig any deeper to understand the basis of what they are told. Today is proof of that.

Well, as for me I see this vote as a shift in the core values of this country.

And I see the vote as a huge shift to the left, and perhaps the beginning of the end.

Unfortunately, the people that voted for obama will not see until it is too late.

The white voter is irrelevent because he's had "DIVERSITY" crammed down his throat. Excluding people based on race is wrong but so is including people based on race. There are so many jack asses out there willing to prove how open and diverse they are that they will elect a SOCIALIST to prove the point. Whatever happened to most qualified? This absolutely sucks.
