View Full Version : "W." Right or Wrong?

I just got done seeing a preview for the upcoming movie "W." for the 10th time and it got me to thinking. I'm not a Bush supporter and have been openly critical towards the Bush Admin. since day 1. However, for some odd reason there is a guttural feeling that there is something wrong in principle about a movie openly mocking and lampooning a sitting President. Oliver Stone has made it crystal clear that he holds the utmost disdain and antipathy for President Bush/Dick Cheney. Liberal Hollywood gave him a green light on this ridiculous movie and here we are. It just seems to me that we have sunk to an all new low in this country. There is no respect for the office or an ounce of class left in the dirty glass of water that is modern Hollywood. I don't particularly like or respect our President, but I would treat him with respect if I was to interact with him. It's a shitty deal to make a fool of a sitting President even if he is a disappointment. What does that convey to other countries when we satirize and exploit our own Commander-in-Chief?
I think it sucks and this is coming from a Democrat. I think I'm just getting too old. This graceless age we live in now just turns my stomach. However, there is a possibility I'm making more out of this than there is. Oh well....
What are your thoughts on the subject??

I am not, and have never been a Bush booster. I think he's a stooge for his "advisors," and his father's friends. That being said, I think Oliver Stone is an idiot for making this film. Mark my words, it will be heavy handed, at times dull, and totally unconcerned with the truth. Hell, I watched a documentary he did of the political and diplomatic problems in Israel/Palestine, and I think the creative editing, and lack of objectivity would've made Michael Moore cringe. That being said, He only has a few decent flicks, and they're pretty much the same: heavy handed, dull, and totally unconcerned with the truth.

O. Stone is retarded. If it could be possible, he's more of a liar and fear monger than M. Moore.
Anyone who watches a Stone movie comes out Dumber for having watched it.

I watched a news report yesterday on the preview, it mentioned a large percentage of the viewers got up and walked out well before the film was over.

Can't remember which news cast it was but they interviewed people walking out of it and they said the movie doesn't portray Bush as bad as they thought.
Which, of course, means the movie will die. Bush supporters aren't gonna watch it and the rabid left will be disappointed in it.
Good move, Oliver.
As far as other countries, countries like England, France and Germany satirize their leaders so bad it makes political cartoons in the States look like the Peanuts.

Regardless of the politics involved, I wouldn't give credit to anything Oliver Stone does because he is incredibly biased and can't get past his own prejudice long enough to be objective.
My opinion of Stone's movie would be the same if this was a Bill and Hillary or Barack Hussein Obama movie. The man is a hack.

True, but I think Stone will make the bulk of his money off this movie in Europe. They're going to eat this shit up.

I don't think you're reading into it too much... As much as I think Bush is a dope I don't think we should making fun of our President and running the country into the ground...
In my opinion, people like Oliver Stone do a great disservice to this country by airing fictitious dirty laundry as if it were fact. Its the same thing Moore does and Bill Maher is doing with his religious movie. I'm far from religious but I'm not going to make fun of someone who believe...
These people hide behind the first amendment while cashing in on the idiots that believe their propaganda. The most annoying point is they act as if they are the enlightened ones and anyone who doesnt believe them or challenges them is unedicated, uninformed, racist and/or republican...
I also think its kind of ironic they are trying "educate" the masses about the worlds injustices but are more than willing to keep every penny they make from these "documentaries"...

My opinion?
If it were a movie about a Democrat, it wouldn't be one of mockery.

If it were an honest one, they wouldn't NEED mockery. The truth would be bad enough.

My yellow '66 Charger was in JFK.
And that's all I got to say about that.
I get so tired of Hollywood trying to ram their fucking politics down my throat.
Oliver Stone is a fucking idiot.

Did you get paid? I watched the filming of JFK, and Stone is such a stickler for detail that working from old photos the license plates of cars parked on the street had to be the same. Of course the setting was '63?
Actually no Hollywood studio would fund W, and he went to the Chinese for funding. Doh!!! At least somebody will make money off the Chinese for a change.

The media, Hollywood and the general public are ready for something different, which is Obama. They are going to slam Bush till the end. He's the scape-goat for any and everything.

I've read 2 reviews, both say the movie IS basically accurate. Both also said the movie, while definately not an endorsement of Bush, is not a a "slam" either.
I will see "W", but with the mindset that it's not a documentary. I genrally like Oliver Stone movies, but I view them for what they are :entertainment.

Did you get paid?I didn't - but my aunt did. She owned the car at the time. It was part of "My Car the Star", a company that gets cars for movies.Of course the setting was '63?Not sure if you've seen the movie, but the lawyer's investigation took place AFTER the assassination. :D ;)

Cool. It's nice to get a little validation on this argument.
I hope this movie bombs at the box office. This just gives me the same feeling as when the Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks was denouncing the President on foreign soil shortly after the start of the war. For which she subsequently apologized after people were burning their cd's. And then recently rescinded the original apology now they are doing well again.

SNL has satired presidents since Gerald Ford with Chevy Chase Tumbling down the stairs in every skit. However, never has SNL tried to say its satires are the truth and a documentary like this movie has. Satire is valuable because it *should* keep us all humble.
Doing things like burning an effigy of George Bush is not satire.
There is a difference between satire and vehemency, and in the immortal words of Rick James, " Oliver Stone is a habitual line-crosser".

The term "based on a true story" is looked at pretty lightly by hollywood, and hopefully the public. Then again, hollywood says "believe this" and the public seems to do so.

Saw "W" this afternoon. I thought it was a good movie. Although it does paint Bush as less than a genius (which is correct),the flick also portrayes him as a man with basically a good heart, if a bit misguided.
The young Bush is seen as an overprivaledged frat boy, with drinking problems and no real ambition or drive. But he finally beats the booze through his own efforts, and figures out what his strengths are.
The flick DOES make the President's cabinet out as the real boobs here, and Bush really bitches 'em out too. Josh Brolin's portrayal of Bush is good, as is Richard Dreyfuss as Cheney.
Rabid Bushbots may not like it, but most others will.

Good review.
Still, it would have shown more taste if they would have released it after he left office.

we went and saw it last night and all of us thought that the movie was terrible. to me it was like they tried to make a serious movie out of a comedy skit from saturday night live...making the script more or less serious but still having the comical characters that snl tries to portray.

Would you offer that the release of it while he was still in office and a close election at hand was politically motivated?

Could be. Making the Republican party appearing to be bumbling fools on the silver screen certainly isn't helping the McCain ticket around election time.
