DUBLIN (Reuters) - Ireland's biggest bookmaker Paddy Power said Thursday it would pay out early more than 1 million euros (782,776 pounds) on bets that Barack Obama will be the next U.S. president, three weeks ahead of the election.

The Dublin-based bookmaker said it made the "unprecedented decision" to pay on bets taken so far, following Wednesday's final campaign debate between Obama and his Republican rival John McCain, which polls judged the Democrat to have won.

"We declare this race well and truly over and congratulate all those who backed Obama," Power said.

"Although he seemed a little out of sorts in last night's final debate we believe he has done more than enough to get him across the line on November 4."

The bookmaker said the overall betting trend had shown "one- way traffic" for the Illinois senator since the start of the summer, with odds shortening to 1-9, meaning a bet of 9 euros is required to make 1 euro profit.

Power said it had taken more than 10,000 bets on the 2008 U.S. presidential election, the majority in support of Obama.

In June a wager of 100,000 euros was placed on Obama to win at odds of 1-2, yielding a payout of 150,000 euros, it added...

It's not like a bookie to pay out anything until it's really over.

Why does it say "advertisement" in the article?

As far as paying out, the bookie is paying out. He's canceling future betting because he can't find another side even at 1-9 odds. He's taking a bath paying these people off because he is having to offset the bet himself since no one is picking McCain.

I wouldn't count McCain out just yet . I think there are quite a few closet racist that will not vote for him simply because he's black or perceived as a muslim . Naturally , they can't exactly admit to that when asked in polling .

I dunno man. I just don't see him overcoming the lead Barry has.

I don't like McCain and I think he has run a pretty stupid campaign but Obama has "Jimmy Carter" written all over him, but worse.

Obama definately seems to have the momentum and he appears to have it wrapped up but ........ George Bush didn't look strong coming into the 2004 elections either .

I can't make a call on this, but keep a few things in mind: Barry held a 10 pt. over Hillary in California, and lost by 2 pts. in the primary. In 2000 and 2004, Dems had commanding leads, even going by "exit" polls, and lost both...

Uh, I'm not convinced until the ballots are counted and the electoral college has their say.

It seems to me that people seem to vote more conservatively when they actually get in the booth. And people that side with the Democrats generally have a tendency to not vote even when they say they will.

And of course, polls are never taken using biased questions.

I guarantee the double-digit lead that Barack has in the polls will not exist in the actual election.

Carter had a 4-6% lead in the polls over Reagan three days before the election, and we all knew how that turned out. I'm not writing off this election until all the votes are tallied, the fraudulent votes removed, there is several recounts and riots, and then all that nonsense is swept aside and, as quoted...

the electoral college has their say.

...and our presidential race decided.

I agree with all of y'all. O'bama will not have the landslide some of the polls are showing. If he wins he will squeak by in the state counts. He may have a large win in the electoral college depending on what states he carries. But the actual vote will be close way to close to call this far out.

I am curious how the polls move after this last debate.

Probably not too much, at least in my opinion. Without a prediction of the outcome, I'll say this: Barry better be leading by a solid 10 points in all the polls to win this thing. Exit polls will not reliable at all with a black candidate, for fear of white folks being portrayed as racists'.

All that matters is the electoral votes ..... first one to 270 wins it all .

I know where I can get 10 to 1 odds with at least a $1k bet against Obama. I'd have to think with those odds I've got to take it!

McCain is going to win. There are enough people that will have a gut check at the end that will cost Obama the election.

People want the sweet icing, without having to taste the shit cake under it. They LOVE what the Obama fucker is preaching, but do not look through the bullshit to see he can not deliver. He stumbles around answers dishing out fairy dusts that further pulls the wool over these fuckers eyes! It amazes me that people can not see through his bullshit....
It sickens me to say it, but I have a feeling at this point the dipshit will take the election, and we will have to put up with him and his nightmare of a wife for the next 4 years! He is definately a one termer, and I hope all the fuckers that vote for him crawl back in their caves in 2012 after he fucks this country up even further then it is!

That's the problem with creating your own odds. They weren't big enough to give McCain a shot. Now, throw out a 1000:1 and you'll get some people hooked, but you throw out a 9:1, it's not worth the gamble. The idea is (and I'm sure Eric knows, but I am just explaining books to everyone) is to find "suckers who think they can beat the odds (ie: the ones who pay for the larger number on the left).

I've gone to Lone Star Park and use a combination of using Norm's picks and betting WITH the odds. I use a lot more moeny than I actually win, but I have NEVER left the track with less money than I came with (even covering food, beer, entry for the family, etc.).

God, I hope McCain pulls a rabbit out his hat.

I would luv to see people like that eat their crow and then choke on the last bite.
