View Full Version : HDTV w/DVI port, PS3 w/HDMI, Cable w/HDMI - help!

Here's the deal:
I've got an HDTV that has only ONE DVI port with either optical or A/V sound.
I've got a PS3 and an HD Cable box that both use HDMI cables. However, since my TV has a DVI port, I run a DVI to HDMI adapter, but I can not receive the sound through the HDMI cable. This means I have to also run the A/V cables or an optical audio cable.
My trouble is that I can not have both hooked up at once. I have to disconnect the HD Cable Box and connect the PS3 every time I want to play.
I have a DVI to HDMI converter on my TV so I can use the HDMI cables. This works great. I know they make a HDMI 2-into-1 splitter. Would this work for connecting both the Cable Box and the PS3 HDMI cables? Would this only receive signal from the one that is powered?
If the HDMI 2-into-1 splitter works, then what are my options for sound if I only have 1 sound jack?
Thanks in advance.

Do you have surround sound at all ? The easiest/best thing to do it run all sound through a receiver with multiple HDMI in's and then run one HDMO from the receiver to the TV.
Failing that you can split it like you mentioned but I would be willing to bet that it does degrade the signal somewhat.

Wesman,
I've got a pre-HD surround sound that was given to me a long time ago...but it isn't even hooked up. I have all of the speakers which are good - can you recommend a decent receiver?

a. you can buy an hdmi switch. i use this one so i only have to run 1 long hdmi run to my projector. works great and is programmed into my harmony so i just pretend the box isnt there. http://www.monoprice.com/products/search.asp?keyword=4571
b. you can buy a receiver with hdmi.
the Onkyo 605 and 606 (replaced the 605) support HDMI audio and will up convert all other video formats to 1080p and output them via HDMI which is nice for cable management and easy of connecting your tv. they also decode the new audio formats (trueHD and dts-hd)
onkyo 576. you can get this receiver pretty cheap. it has 3 hdmi in ports and does support hdmi audio. it doesnt upcovert nor does it have the new audio formats.

Thanks for the info...I'll have to look into these.
If I use the switch, wouldn't I still have to swap my audio cables depending on whether I'm using the Cable Box or the PS3? The switch would be for the HDMI cables, but because my TV is DVI (not HDMI), then the sound wont be switched - correct?
Seems to me like I may just need a new TV :D

even with the switch you should still send your audio to a receiver instead of the tv. tv speakers blow, even a crappy htib setup is better than tv speakers.
what kinda speakers do you have?

Exactly what I was going to recommend. They have pretty decent quality for the price. There is absolutely better stuff out there of course, but bang for the buck is pretty good with them.

also be sure to check out local Best Buy/Circuit City/Frye's etc for discontinued or floor models. I picked up a floor model Sony for $350 that was originally $699, it still had all the features I wanted/that the newer model had at half the price.

I agree. Get one that does audio and video over HDMI.
I also agree that you shouldn't use your TV speakers at all.

My TV has been on mute for years now. Also, once you get a receiver and have a source such as sat Tv it will likely have a echo effect if you continue to use the Tv speakers.
