Is it possible to turn off the touchpad mouse thing, or at least make it a lot less sensitive? I have a separate mouse that works fine, but whenever I type on the laptop, my thumbs tap or brush up against the built-in touchpad and screw everything up. It took me forever to figure out what was going on, because I didn't even feel my thumbs touching it. My hands are way too big to not have my thumbs hovered right over it.

I searched through the control panel and wasn't able to find a way to adjust it or turn it off completely. Any help would be awesome.

Several that I have messed w/ had a program called Synaptic Touch Point that If I'm not mistake is the OS if you will for those touch pad things. You might see if it's on there and try and unistall it in add/remove programs or disable the touch pad in device manage. Also look in control panel>mouse/pointing devices. It might have an option to disable it there. <---Try this first.

I found the touchpad in the control panel, but I'm unable to make any changes to anything.

This sucks. It makes my laptop a pain in the ass to use.

Look in the BIOS to see if it has an option to disable the touchpad when another mouse is present... that's what I do on my Dell.

What is BIOS, and how do I look in it?

The BIOS can usually be accessed right after your reboot your computer by pressing a key like F2. Reboot your system and it should say something like F2 for Setup or DEL for BIOS SETUP, etc.

What model laptop do you have?

Jared, if you're not able to get it I can probably take care of it for you.

It's a Dell. I don't know what the model number is. That F2 BIOS stuff sounds way too fancy for me. I'd probably mess something up.

Cool!

Okay try this, it worked for my Dell D620.

In the system icons on the bottom right near the time, do you see an icon for the Touch Pad?

Right click it, go to Mouse Properties.

Is there a check box with the option, Disable Touch Pad / Stick when USB pointing device is plugged in?

If so check it...

Surprisingly, there is no icon for my touchpad. I figured there would be, too, but there is not.

I can go into the Touchpad properties from the Control Panel, though. I just can't make any changes. It even has a tab in that screen to change settings, but clicking on it does nothing. I tried this with the separate mouse connected and also without it connected. It's quite frustrating.

Is this a personal machine? If so then you should have admin rights... hm

Okay, I went through the control panel and went to Mouse. It is the same thing as an icon in the toolbar.

Here is what I see and what I checked. Touch Pad is greyed out because I deleted the drivers to see if it would disable it.

Ya, it's just my personal laptop. Bought it brand new in the box. Some of the settings on it were weird though right out of the box. For example, the DVD player region was set funky and it wouldn't play DVDs until I went in and changed the region to USA. I have yet to master the sleep/hibernate thing. Sometimes I grab it after sitting overnight and it's still on. Sometimes I close it and it shuts off immediately, and then gives me an error saying I didn't shut down windows properly next time I go to use it.

I suck at computers, but sometimes it's not just me!

My screen looks different. I don't have a tab that says "Touchpad". I have a window with the hardware devices listed though, and can click on the touchpad and then properties. From that screen there is a little tab that says "change settings", but clicking it does nothing. Are you using Vista? My windows/tabs/options look different from yours.

I'm running XP Professional. I've never really messed with Vista too much. if you had your laptop's model name I could research it some.

edit: Looks like if you install some drivers from http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R141200&SystemID=INS_PNT_1501&servicetag=&os=WLH&osl=en&deviceid=283&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=1&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=17&fileid=188272

Then reboot, then go back into the Mouse settings you would have to chance to Disable.

Just glue a small piece of cardboard over it, or tape it on so it can be removed later. ;)

Forget all the fancy smancy Bios stuff, go old school on it!

That's not necessarily out of the question.
