if its tripping the breaker something is inducing an electrical load past what the circuit/breaker is designed for. You dont have the AC plugged into a long extension cord do you? Can you feel any heat on the cord? It could also be a faulty breaker switch as well.

Worst case is the compressor is shorting out internally and this condition is kicking the breaker. This would produce symptoms you describe, leaving the air handler fan going with no compressor start.

If breaker for condenser is tripping, might be your compressor grounding out. Will outside unit run at all?

bulging capacitor. or clean your condenser, is the outside fan running on it when the breaker is reset?

the switch was faulty, after flipping it on after it would flip off, now it wont even flip on. so i replaced it, it cost $60 cause it some old kind and they dont really make anymore. well now i have a new problem, i left the house while it cooled down, when i got home it was flipped off again. i guess it fried too, cause it wont flip on

edit the outside doesnt come on either

You are gonna have to offer up some more detail here. Is this a window unit or central AC? 110V or 220V?

This "switch" you replaced - is it actually a breaker switch in a panel or a switch on a window unit? I'm no electrician but $60 seems like a lot for a breaker even if its a bridged 240V

Sounds like you may have a short at the unit itself, or the start-up capacitor on the unit is drawing too many amps?

man, just fix the breaker issue. Then call a A/C company to come out and see what the isuue is. Worst case scenario bad compressor...

Open up both units and inspect the wires. I had wires melt together that were connected to the contacter, on the outside unit, causing my breaker to fry, as well. Also, most of the parts that go bad will look burnt of melted. If you inspect it, I'm sure you will see something wrong.

so i called a A/C company to come out and see what the isuue was. i'll try and explain from what i got out of it. after a compressor gets kind of old(5years+) it takes mote amps to start up. so when my a/c would start back up, after its been running, the amps would jump up to 90. i think max was 35, so it was tripping the breaker. the tech added this

http://www.five-two-one.com/

keeps it from jumping the amp at start or something like that. anybody else have one of these, so far my house is nice and cool :)

it's a good fix if that's all that's wrong.
I charge 65 for that and 55 for a service call but I don't leave the Midlothian area usually.
