I was reading about UV-C killing germs - mold - etc. There are a bunch of units to buy for a room - but saw a unit you put in your HVAC duct work - I assume intake - which seems like a better way to go than room units.
any HVAC guys got thoughts on UV-C "air cleaners?"
I have 6 dogs and a cat with 2 family members with asthma .... so looking for any help we can get in air quality ------
And NO the dogs are not going to go .....

I installed one in the middle of my coil after washing it and it seems it worked out good. Coil is clean as fuck still.
It is about 150$ for one and takes 5 minutes to install.

My system has filters in the return air vents and a thin washable in the furnace. I run the 3M pleated fiters that are in the red package (I forget the particle rating that they trap, but they are second to the highest level they offer). I have 2 dogs and a cat that shed like crazy and they are awesome. I change them out every 6 weeks instead and the recomended 3 months. The bad news is the filters are about $10 per.

I went to a seminar on these things about 5 years ago. At the time, I wasn't real impressed. I do think they are using them more in hospitals these days, but at the same time, they are not very common. For some reason I think they go on the supply side of the fan, not the intake, but like I said, they are not real common. If you google IAQ, I bet you can find some good information though. Maybe look at ASHRAE's web site too for some technical publications.
By the way, I just ran across an article on IAQ for hotels, they had one small bullet point about UV light in the entire article. It mentioned it was to eliminate mold. Something to think about.
