If I ordered a new sub for the house, and it had to be delivered by semi, unloaded by pallet jack, and needed at least 2 people to move it into position, would that be going overboard? :o

I've installed my fair share of home theater rooms and have yet to see one that needed anything like that. Can't hate though, keep on keepin' on. We'll need pics though, at least I do.

Can't decide between that and the SVS PB13-Ultra.

Conquest is a big mofo! But I will only need 1
SVS is a little smaller, looks better. But not sure if 1 will be enough, or will I need 2.

I have about 6000cuft of space, and I'm worried about maxing out the SVS.

I remember you selling a sub, what was it? Pretty sure it was a SVS, what model was it? Safe to assume the new one is going in the room that one came out of? How close was your old one to your listening needs?

Nah, that was a HSU VTF3 MKII. It was a 3rd sub.
I have 2 right now. HSU HO with Turbo(lower bass), and an MBM-12(mid bass). Fills the room pretty well, but with 6000cuft, it can't keep up with my demands. I'm wanting something with a little more balls :D

Thats exactly my problem. I have a little over 6000cuft with the living room, dining room and kitchen combined.

My choice at the moment is the SVS PB13-Ultra, or the Epik Conquest. They are both about the same price. Epik would fill every bit of my room without a problem. The SVS MAY do the job, but I still might need another one :( Just not sure which way to go.
Epik has a 3-4 week build time. SVS could be here within 3 days.
Epik is HUGE! Which is another reason I am considering the SVS.

Granted its a little larger than the Epik Conquest, and requires a 230V outlet for it's 8500W on-board amps. Oh and it might be a tad bit more than $1500

There is NO such thing as overkill!! :D

Yeah, I sold one a while back. But I was running 3 subs. I had to get rid of 1 of them, they were taking up too much space. I'm still running 2 subs.

Either of the new subs would take the place of my existing subs, and give me a bit more headroom. As it stands now, I can bottom out my subs in a lot of low frequency scenes. One example is the scene in the movie Pulse, it hits low and loud.
Plus the sound quality is amazing when you step up to the next level of subs. It's not about how loud you can play it, but how accurately it reproduces the sound.

Just an update on my sub situation for those who care...

Been talking with Mark Seaton(the godfather of HT subs), and we are discussing a custom built sub. With 2 15" drivers in a sealed enclosure, 1000 watt onboard amp. Cabinet size should be livable in size, and it'll have a nice finish to it. With this combo, he claims the hz to be down into the single digits

I really considered the Epik Conquest(pictured above), but it's size is a huge issue for me. Plus positioning it would be a challenge. Going the custom build route, would give me more flexability moving it around(if I needed to), and wouldn't be such an eye sore :D

I should know more within the next week or so. Just trying not to make an impulse buy here, like I did last time. Nothing more frustrating to me than wasting money :( The SVS is still a consideration, but I just don't think I'm going to be completely happy with the end result.

I have the last gen SVS PC-Ultra and WOW is this sub clean. It can shake the living crap out of the entire house, and it is still clean. With that being said, there are times with super low bass that I've bottomed it out. It was uncomfortably loud, but I was able to do it.

It is beautiful to listen to music with. Sounds great with movies, but it's harder to tell quality when the track is so complex. I have pretty varied listening preferences, and have been happy with the way it sounded in all. I don't even have the sub setup correctly for the room, as it's just in the corner right now and not fully calibrated. Too many projects right now.

I don't know anything about the Epik sub, but you will definitely be happy with the quality of the SVS one.

Big question is, how large is your room?
Myself, I'm trying to fill a little over 6000cu ft. And thats a healthy task for any single sub. After talking with Ed at SVS, he agreed that the PB10-Ultra may not meet my needs alone. I would have to have 2 of them in order to fill my room. Thats $3500 shipped, and it MIGHT get down to the Hz that I'm wanting. So I started looking at other manufactures within my price range. Elemental Designs has a pretty hefty unit, but it's too heavy(over 400 pounds). The Epik Conquest is also a pretty large unit(40" tall). This brought me to Mark Seaton. We are currently discussing my options for him to build me a sub.

SVS is a good looking sub, but I need output, plain and simple. I want the Hz to drop into the low teens, or single digits. And SVS just didn't think they could meet my needs without running multiple subs.

If Mark can't deliver, I may end up with the Conquest. But his suggestion of the box, plus 2-15" drivers and 1k watt amp sounds plausible :D

Mustangman_2000

Not too many people max out a SVS. The PC-Ultras are monsters.

Have you considered running dual subs instead of one giant sub?

I've heard a dual 12" HSU subs in a relatively large room with high ceilings. System was calibrated at 80 db and it tried to rip the house apart well below reference levels.

SVS has some infrasonic stuff and their BASH amps can keep it clean and linear. HSU Research top end models can reach down really low as well.

You sound like an overkill type of guy. I've got a cheap $300 Infinity PS12 400watt peak sub that can get reach down to almost 25hz. There are movie soundtracks out there that go infrasonic, but not a lot of titles. 90% of the time they like the 30 - 35hz spectrum.

I have HSU now.
Running an HO w/turbo and an MBM module. Last year, I was running 3 HSU subs :D
They are great subs, don't get me wrong. But I have a lot of space to fill. I've considered their new model(ULS 15) that goes down to 10hz, but it won't go that low in my room. In order to take advantage of their 10hz claim, I would have to run 4(yes FOUR) ULS 15's. 2 in the front and 2 in the rear, plus at least 1 MBM module. Thats 5 subs total! I just don't have the space for that, and my g/f would absolutely KILL me :D
Last time I was in California(about 2 months ago), I actually stopped by HSU and demo'd their new ULS15. It was an impressive sub. Best they've come out with so far. But to get where I want to be, they're just not gonna cut it. The wireless feature on it is awesome! That is a huge plus in my book!

There are a LOT of movies that reach well below the 30hz mark, a lot! And I like to take advantage of them. I like to feel the pressurization of the room when watching a movie :D Right now, I'm getting down to about 16hz, but it bottoms out quickly in my large room. For 99% of the HT people, this would be fine, but I'm in that lonely 1% that needs more :o

Yes, that feeling is great.

My room is only about 2500 cuft. If you are looking for very high SPL in that large of a room, there is no way one PC-Ultra will cut it. You could go with 2 like you mentioned and have them tuned at 10Hz and I think you'd be happy with it. I currently have mine tuned at 15Hz.

Good luck in your choice, I always thought it would be fun to do a custom sub setup for a HT. I've listened to a few custom ones, and while they were loud I was never happy with their musical performance. Just sounded too muddy. Of course, that's not to say all custom ones will be muddy.

At that size/weight, there won't be any "trying" is out. Shipping it back won't be an option @ $300 each way. If I buy it, I'm keeping it. Can't just go pick one up at the store, these are custom built to order. If I don't like it and decide to ship it back, I'll be out $600 :(

Plans have changed a bit. Originally we were going to go with dual 18 inch drivers.

Here are the new specs...

*Dual, custom designed, 15" drivers with 3" diameter voice coils
*A sealed enlcosure built from very strong and rigid Baltic Birch Plywood
*Drivers on opposing faces for a completely inert, stablized cabinet that won't walk, shake or quiver.
*A robust, high efficiency, 1,000W ICEpower based amplifier with SMPS power supply.
*Isolated balanced input eliminating common ground loop problems
*Cabinet dimensions: 24.25" W x 17.5" D x 25.5" H

With room gain introduced, this combo should get down to about 8hz. But Iĺl be happy with 10-12hz in this large of a room, and the mid bass punch should knock your socks off :D The ICEpowered amp is one of the best in production. So Im excited about the possibilities of this unit.

Getting closer to delivery!!!! :D

That sounds like you will have a robust package. You must have a very large room.

When you get it set up I'll be anxious to see a waterfall chart to see just how low you can actually go and with what authority.

8 hz is a very ambitious goal. SVS and HSU Research make the best subs on the planet and they can get to 10 with some authority. My PS212 can get down close to 20hz, but with no authority. It noses over at 25hz. Therefore, the maximum range for the sub is 25hz. Even though it can actually go lower.

15" can move prodigious amounts of air, but one of the biggest reason a lot of audiophiles don't use 15's is because of response and turn over.

I'll be interested in hearing a review of your system after you get it set up.

My latest combo(HSU HO and MBM) can get down pretty good, but not quite what I want :D

Room is 6000cuft

What wouldn't work? I'm no expert, but maybe I can help?
