to run a new circuit out of the breaker box for a automatic security light? Seems pretty simple to me. Anything to watch out for? I don't want to burn down my house :o

Seems like I would need:

1. New breaker
2. 12-2 or 14-2 romex
3. metal box to attach the light to
4. the light itself
5. Wire nuts, etc.

Al wiring will be in the attic.

Also, if I chose to have someone do the job for me what would it cost?

are you talking about motion lights

No, I'm pretty sure he wants them stationary.

Sounds like just a little weekend project. I would go with an electrician, though, if you're talking about putting in a new circuit into the panel.

wouldn't it be easier to just branch off of another circuit nearby? i wouldn't think one set of lights would be THAT much of a load worth running a dedicated line.

I thought about that too. I didn't think that there was a nearby circuit but now I just realized that there is one I could probably tap into.

Mike, at our old house I took some 12 gauge or maybe 14 (don't remember) wire, got a recepticle end (or whatever it is called) for it and plugged it into an outlet, ran the wire up the wall and cut a small hole in the ceiling, ran it across to the eve and out over the garage and installed a light with the motion sensor. Little sealed halogen bulbs in it, it lit the driveway up at night compeltely. I did cut the hole and install an electrical box to mount the light too also, so it actually was a decent job, and passed when we had the house inspected when it sold.

The wire I used was 3 wires in a plastic sheath that was rated for outdoors, so it was pretty stout.

done did that. Had to very quickly accelerate my plans on that deal. Got a DIY kit and put them up in a day.

It sounds like you already got it done, but if not hit me up. I'm no expert, but I've run extra lines without any fires so far :D

I think i'm going to run with rob's idea. I have an available outlet on the ceiling of my garage that would be perfect. I forgot it was up there or I wouldn't have asked the question in the first place :o

Now I just have to find a good spot to mount the light.

I did this, worked great  Thanks!

Cool, glad it worked out for ya! I did the same thing at a friends house right after he bought it. His wife works till after it is dark, and the driveway had no lights at all.
