handguns are a poor choice for home defense IMO

A shotgun could be good for y'all. I have plenty of pistols at my disposal if you want to have a range day try some out. Good to hear Tamara is willing to have a gun in the house for protection.

If you or your wife are not experianced with firearms I would suggest a revolver. For instance, you are out of town and someone breaks in and your wife picks up the auto and pulls the trigger and it goes click instead of boom, will she know how to clear the misfire? With a revolver if there is a misfire, pull the trigger again and the next round is there.

if pistols were useful for home defense hunters would use them for spring turkey season....

A pistol can be sitting next to you as you watch TV. A shotgun will be tucked in a closet.

I feel that a hand gun is much safer for home defense than a shotgun/rifle. Much easier to retain if for some reason you get into close quarters with the intruder. There is no muzzle sticking out there for them to get a hold of.

That's the most idiotic statement I've read on here lately  If turkey's were armed and attacking me in the house I'd probably say that makes sense  :D

LMAO good one bro.

Scott a pistol is what she wants and that is a good choice. Hit me up and we can go to the range to find out which one she likes and shoots the best for her and then hit up a gun show to pick one up.

I second this. I still have yet to take my wife to a gun range to show her how to load the clip, rack the slide, click the safety off THEN shoot.

Revolver is just one simple motion.

Now if it's for you. Do what I did and get a Saiga 20 7.62x39 conversion and pass the 922r requirements and turn it into a mean AK conversion.

There's a place for everything and everybody. I just don't believe a shotgun should be the only option for home defense especially if it's a woman. It's both awkward and difficult to have a shotgun near by all the time while at home for most people. A pistol fits the bill perfectly though and with the proper holster can be kept on ones person at all times.

I hate to say it but I keep my Glock on me most of the time while I'm at home. Anybody ever here the saying that a pistol is only used until I can make it back to my shotgun/rifle :D

That saying sometimes goes on to say...

"...that you never should have left behind in the first place."

If my shotgun is upstairs, and a shithead comes through the front door, I have to fight through the SH to get to the shotty...

Basically, fight with what you've got or can easily get to. Most times that will be a pistol.

And rangetime and defensive pistol classes will help you prepare for such an event.

Turkey hunting is close quartered, often you are surprised by the animal, sometimes you have to quickly drop what you are doing grab the gun and make the shot, your paying a bunch to hunt so you have to be %100 sure you'll make the shot so yes there is nothing in common.

I understand the turkey isn't trying to kill you but to me the advantages of a shotgun in a defense situation, if my life is on the like I'd like to have the garantee of a shotgun blast vs a pistol.

If you are close to a person you can't draw a shotgun I figure your out of luck at that point and a pistol wouldn't do you much better unless it was under your pillow.

Turn off the lights at the shooting range and aim a pistol where you think the target is do the same with the shotgun, once again i'm verily certain you'd have more success with the shotgun.

If an auto is absolutely the only option I would say look into the Taurus 24/7 or the Pt-111 millinium pro. These run 299 or 349 at academy and they are solid little autos for a great price. They have lifetime warranty's the only Double Action striker fired pistol on the market and a slightly smaller grip size that accommodates shooters with smaller hands very well. Probably want to use .40 or .45 depending on how worried you are about shooting through the walls/exterior of the house.

If you want to spend more on the Glock, Springfield, S&W, Beretta, Baby Eagle you can but for something that will spend most of its time in a drawer you would be just fine with the Taurus.

Get her a little airweight .38 snub, show her how easy it is to use and be done with it.
Point and click, bang bang bang.

Autos are awesome and I love 'em, but I've got a wheel gun too and it's fool-proof.
My wife is intimidated by the clip and the slide and the heft, etc. But she digs the compactness and lightweight of the .38.

I also second the shotgun suggestion too. You can pick up a Winchester Defender 12 at the gunshow for peanuts, same with the Mossberg. Rack that slide one time when you've got an intruder and listen to 'em high-tail it the hell out of your house...

It will stop anything short of a nuclear attack.

I have my semi auto shotty for my wife to use. If she's in bed and hears something, she knows to back into a corner, aim for the door, and wait. For me, I have multiple pistols and such to choose from. In my house, I prefer my shotty over my 1911, although when I'm out in the woods or on my property, I use it or a .357 mag Ruger Vaquero (can put some rat shot in). My wife is a lightweight, so autos intimidate her. Oh, I did forget she likes the Ruger with heavey .38s in it. But the shotty is our preference.

It really depends on what you and your wife is comfortable with. If an auto is what ya'll are intersted in, I'd suggest everything from 9mm CZ's to Springfield XDs. Dont let people fool you into thinking you HAVE to have a larger caliber pistol. A 9mm hollow point, or even some heavy .380s, will do well enough. Also, if ya'll are inexperienced with firearms in any way, go ahead and take a class, it will increase your confidence in your abilities and safety awareness. And yes, it should be standard to go to the range at least monthly in order to maintain your familiarization.

my wife has shot them all with me, and is very comfortable with them all except the 12 gauge-if you ask her what she is going to grab, same answer every time, the .38 wheelgun

We have this conversation a lot.

I would say a pump shotgun because most people will run like hell when they hear you rack one. I know long term I would be fine shooting someone but I dont know if my wife would.

Plus it is hard to miss close range as well, aim and point. You can practice shooting all you want but some people freak out when their adrenaline gets going.
