I hate the feeling of not being able to protect myself at home... I look around my room and have nothing that could scare off someone.
I'm looking for something on the cheap side as it would be my first gun. Both of these guns are relatively cheap, 180 bucks. Is one better than the other?

Go with the Mossberg. Good quality for the price and it has one more round than the H&R in case you miss with the first five shots.

Didn't you just learn how to wipe your own ass a couple years ago?

Pick up a Mossberg 500 ~$230 (not the cheaper maverick), or maybe a 590 if you have the extra coin. Comes with a bayonet lug.:D

Harrington & Richardson has been around a while. But given a choice I'd go with the Mossberg myself. And with an additional shell capacity, that would seal the deal for me.

i have a mossberg maverick. i like it alot and am sure it will kill someone just as good as a more expensive alternative.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
Now is there a kit to keep it clean? How often should I be doing this?

Just a regular 12 gauge bore cleaner should be fine I would think.

You can get a Remington 870 for under $300...and you can get a tube extension to hold additional rounds...
if you don't want to spend that much, then the Mossberg 500 would be next.
I have an old H&R Topper .410 single shot break-open breach shotgun...the firing pin is broken, but had been a good little shotty up until that...I have no experience with their pumps...
I honestly wouldn't waste my time with a Mossberg Maverick...too cheaply built...
Franchi SPAS 12 if you want to take on burglars and look like a movie star at the same time.

Ahh, the ol' Maverick 88.
We were fucking around shooting clays and straight out of the box we put over 1,000 shells through one without ever cleaning it. Ran like a champ for the most part, but it didn't like the few Fiocchi shells we shot.
I bought a Mossberg 930 Home Security. Generally run around the $300-$400 range. Although you can get the full out model for around $550, complete with ghost rings and such. Shooting a semi auto shotgun is a blast!
