Big Brothers and Big Sisters holds a sporting clays shoot in Dallas and Ft Worth each year (16 years for the FT Worth event). The Ticket's own Gordon Keith hosted the Dallas event at Elm Fork Shooting Park just off NW HWY. The fee was $125 per person and they provided breakfast, 100 shells, eyes, ears, a hat, water, a killer catered BBQ lunch, band, etc. Elm Fork even said they had loaner shotguns if anyone needed them. You could have literally rolled up empty handed and still been able to participate since they supplied EVERYTHING.
The weather was great considering all the 100F days we've had. The recent rain we've had kept the normally super dusty golf cart path reasonably dust free. I went by myself but was paired with a good P1 Joel from Ft Worth. For this event, they chose The Woods course and 13 stations. Each station has two target launchers. Some targets are thrown at the same time (true pair) and some are thrown as a single and then after your first shot the second one is thrown (report pair). I had shot The Woods course about two weeks ago so I was expecting a large amount of fail. Since my shoulder was destroyed on my last outing, I bought a slip-on recoil pad. With each shot, it's pillowy-goodness felt like angel boobies on my shoulder. Amazing. Anyway, I started off hitting 4 of 8 targets and while not great, I was off to a good start. I think the best I shot on any of the stations was 6 of 8 but my partner was tearing it up with 6 of 8 and 8 of 8. His past league experience was showing. On the 12th station, my grandfather's 60ish year old Model 12 Winchester pump 20ga was getting cranky. I could not get the floor plate(?) to return to it's proper position so I could not get two rounds loaded. I was "strug-gul-ing" for a minute and finally said "F it" and just shot one shell per pair. Rattled, I shot 0 of 8. I did try to shoot one, cycle, load, and shoot the other but I was too slow. In between the 12th and 13th station, I tried to get my gun going but to no avail. My partner loaned me his super-sweet Browning over/under 12 ga and 8 shells for the last station. A nice gesture for sure but alas, I shot 0 of 8 and the sporting clays gods laughed at my fail.
I only felt beaten down until we got back to the pavillion and saw the brisket, sausage, potato salad, green beans, peppers, brownies, and cookies begging to be devoured. Relaxed for a few. Bought two raffle tickets for a Beretta AL391 and waited as the awards were presented. Gordo amused the crowd with fake willie nelson singing and a few wise cracks and then it was over. A great day for sure!
I am formally calling for a dfwstangs sporting clays gtg. What a blast (ROCK me!)!
