Oh so we're talking carbines?
I was thinking of the lack of enjoyment running 8 rounds threw a Garand.

Just like the picture shows. There was a tracer every 50 rounds. At 1800 rounds per minute there was no discernable break in the tracers. From the ground it looked like you were zapping it with a laser.

Actually its pretty easy. I've possibly done more than that but never counted. When I was stationed on Camp Pendleton we'd go on machine gun shoots, they'd dump 10-12 of us off at the range & there would be 3-4 fifty cals or m60's with a pallet of ammo stacked waist high. They told us they didn't want to take the ammo back so we had to shoot it all. We'd blast away till the barrels got hot, change them & do it again until it was gone.

Actually the Spookies and Spectres were both used extensively in Vietnam. I think the first of the Spectres showed up in 1968 and the Spookies came in late 1970.

when i was in the navy we got to shoot a gau-17 minigun. it would fire 7.63 rds at the rate of 3000 rds a minute. each box held 3000 rds and i emptied five boxes in less than 1 hour. i also was in charge of the 5"/54mm LWG that could shoot 15-25 rds a minute

We used to have family outtings to our place in CO and it wasn't uncommon for us to burn through several thousand rounds a day.
