I have the Captiveworks CW-700s. It has the USB port on the front which makes software updates a snap with my 512mb thumb drive. My 700s goes for about $110.
My box has been down for over 12 hours once. Most of the time, it takes about 4 hours or so for the updates to come out. Usually, by the time I notice that it's down, the update is already available.
I have been getting hit about once a week usually on Wed or Thu at about 4pm. I have gone over three weeks without getting zapped in the past.
Go to websites like freedomfta.com or totalfta.com and do some research on which dish you need and which box suits you best before you buy. Think about if you are going to need HD capability because this will cost more and change the type of box you will need. If you don't like learning new shit and doing research, FTA can get old real fast. Some of the sites will even tell you when the ECM (zap) is coming.

what all channels do you get?
There is more TV than you will ever be able to watch. Sports channels out the ying-yang. Porn channel after porn channel. PPV movies and sporting events.
The question should be "what don't you get?".

I have a Pansat 3500SD. It is up and running about 90% of the time. I wouldn't want it as a primary viewing source, but it is great to have for Pay Per View events and movies and premium channels that I don't pay for on Fios. They take a little effort to get up and going, but worth it in the end.

can i keep my direct tv and use this box..
No...Direct TV users have different LNB's then the FTA systems use.
As far as channels go...Anything DN has, you will have. Anything on 110, and 119 Sats are all open with a uploadable file.
I use a Viewsat Ultra box and its by far one of the most secure boxes out. It autorolls to the new keys when they are changed. Mines been up since the start of the New Year about 3 weeks at a time before it goes down and needs a new update. Free porn FTW.

You can use some DTV lnbs with FTA boxes. I know for sure that the older single lnbs are widely used as add ons to pick up B3V. I researched and found people using the DTV slimline setups as well.
Just as an FYI fun fact, I asked a DTV installer the other day about orbital locations and he said that the only difference between DN and DTV was that DTV uses orbital location 101 for HD and DN uses 129.
