View Full Version : Bought My First Gun Today

I've been given a few guns as gifts over my life, mainly Christmas, such as my .54 caliber muzzle loader, my Mossberg Maverick 12 guage pump, my .308 Revelation bolt action...but i've never purchased one myself.
Until today......
I bought a DPMS AR15 today, .223 caliber rifle. I'm pretty stoked, i'm gonna try to get some pics of it soon

What did you give for it?
NTexas_V-Star

$765 before tax, brand new, came with one 30 round mag, one box of 20 .223 rounds, i bought another 20 round box, came with a case, a cleaning kit but no oil or solvent or cleaning pads.
All said and done I spent $837.16 yesterday
Went and shot yesterday evening at a friends house, had to spend a little time getting familiar with the basic operation of the gun, considering that up until last night i'd never shot anything more complex than my old .308 bolt action.
Got everything down pat though

hehe.
Optics are the gamut with the AR, especically if you have a flat top and/or rails.
There is a picture floating around on internet with a ton of accessories on it.

I've heard that EOTECH and Trijicon are the big dogs in the optic game, but I want to know what all of yall use, I'm trying to gather some opinions, i'm going to start doing some homework later on today.

Nice setup, that's a little more dressy than what i want to go.....which EOTECH model is that?
BTW, HOLY Shit on the first picture posted in here...thats ridiculous, how heavy is that thing, i wonder??
Do any of yall know if there are different brands and model of optics on hand at either Cheaper Than Dirt or Military Gun Supply, that i can look through, and see how i like it.

It is the EOTech 511. I wanted the smaller footprint, and the AA batteries on the 512 did not matter to me VS size...
As far as actually being able to see and hold the glass in person, I would guess Cabella's would be a good start. They seemed to have quite a bit in stock that they had online compared to other places.

What scope is that?
My next build will be a 24" long range, looks like that scope should work!
How do you like your UTG front? I have been looking for a decent/cheap 4 rail....

Here is mine with an ACOG and I have more in this rifle than I like to admit. I also have an EoTech for it for CQB. The ACOG is for "hog/zombie" hunting. :D

Good luck with that dude.
400 meters is pretty tough with that caliber. It might be possible if you go with a match barrel, a match trigger, a better stock, a really good scope and match ammo.
For 600 meters you're going to need a match rifle and handloads. Your rifle won't even make a down payment on what you need.
Be happy with what have - a nice plinker. Don't try to make it into something it will never be.

i've been told that it's doable with the right optics, the right handloads, and lots and lots of practice.....
Also, a problem would be for me to find a place with that much room to shoot....maybe i'll stick to 50m-200m
if i can't do it, i can't do it. But, it'll give me something to do.

That's a good deal. I'll bet it is a bolt action too.
I just don't want a newbie going around spending hundreds - even thousands - of dollars on a AR platform rifle trying to make it into a long-range shooter. An AR is what it is. A really fun gun to shoot. And fairly inexpensive to boot. A long-range rifle, expensive and not so much fun...

I have a 1000 yard rifle built by SG&Y that ran about 6k. Fun to shoot? Not really....its so accurate even a monkey could shoot good groups. It was posting .200 inch groups when I was fireforming ammo for it.

I picked up 200 rounds of 5.56 ball ammo, 55 grain yesterday for 100 bucks, and a spare 30 round mag for 15 dollars...weather permitting, i'm gonna go shoot tomorrow.
Anyone know of any better deals on ammo, or is that a pretty decent deal??

Optics are over-rated.
That gun was designed as a combat rifle and you don't need optics for that.
I qualified expert in the Marines with an M16A2 with open sights on a man sized target at 500 yards.
I carry a patrol carbine at work, and I don't have optics on it. It's not that I can't afford them, I just choose not to.
I qualified with a score of 100% back in March, but I've been shooting this type of gun since 1987.

My dad said they shot 500 yards with peep sights in Army with M1?
Although I think iron sights are plenty for a lot of situations. Some AR's are capable of shooting tighter than 3MOA which is my guess at 18in target @ 500 yards. Hitting a varmint at 500 yards with an AR is very possible, but I think powered optics are necessary. Sub-MOA is quite possible with some AR's going ragged hole.
Depends on what you are doing with it.

Most ARs are used for "plinking" anyway. A true hunting rifle may see 1-2 rounds each time you take it on a hunt.
ARs are meant to go shoot 100-500 rounds a session.
I have a RRA Preditor Pursuit Upper:
http://www.rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_id=271
It has a 20" stainless barrel and I use it for coyotes. I took it out last November to Arkansaw and didn't even run a single round through it....
It's the only AR I have optics on, and it's a 1 MOA gun.
