View Full Version : Kimber Rifle ?'s
So I've been browsing through some magizines looking at various rifles, and was wondering about Kimber rifles. I know their pistols are pretty good, although they only come with a 1 year warranty. But what about their rifles. The one I'm looking at getting is the tactical type, .308 with a 24in barrel, mcmillan stock. It looks to be set up like Remington's tactical rifle, but from what I understand, they want $4k for it or something along those lines. The Kimber I can get for around $2k. So who knows what when it comes to these rifles? Also, what other brands would offer soemthing along the lines of what I'm looking for? Thanks in advance,
-Eric

I've been looking at the same thing lately...can't decide between a Savage, Rem 700, Kimber, etc...
I didn't know this before the other day, but Kimber actually got their start making rifles. It wasn't until about 10 years ago that they started making 1911s.
As for the quality, I don't know anything about that as I have not held, shot, nor even seen one to tell you what they are like.
I didn't know they started off with rifles, hm. Well, I really can't just go to the gun store and pick one up right now. Kinda in the middle of ramping up for my deployment. I was also wondering if these were adjustable triggers or set at how ever many pounds. Thanks for the info so far,

Remington is one of the better brands to build a tactical rifle out

A cheaper way out if you want a "sniper" type of rifle like the Remington 700 P (Police)...
Buy a Rem 700 SPS Varmint. It is the same as the 700 P but with a 26" barrel instead of the 20" on the P...at about 1/4 of the price (or less)...adjustable trigger, .308, etc...
The 700s are very accurate from the factory...be sure to buy good glass, don't go cheap...
So which would be better as far as maintaining velocity and such, the 26in or the 24in barrel? I'm assuming that since it is a varmint rifle, that it should reach out to 1000yrds, or am I being to optimistic? Also, I was wanting to go with a fluted heavy barrel, which I don't think the Remington Varmint rifle comes with. But then again, if its not a big deal with the fluted or not, then I think I can go without it. As far as making the stock a free floating, what should I do or not do?

a .308 700 is capable of 1000 yd shots with a good scope...
It's my understanding (and I may be wrong) that the longer the barrel, the higher the muzzle velocity. The longer the barrel does not necessarily mean more accurate, that is usually left to the length of the sight radius, of course a longer barrel will allow for more distance between the sights, but Remington puts the rear sight in front of the bolt on the 700...
Everything else is a little too detailed for what I actually know at this time...

For $2k you can get a very decent rifle. I am assuming you are using the $2k price is rifle only, no glass. At that price you can go get a FN SPR, Remmy LTR or PSS, Tikka T3.
There are plenty of choices out there. Most rifles will out shoot the guy behind the trigger.
Look at spending the same if not more on glass. I would suggest US Optics, Nightforce or Schmidt and Bender.
Or you can spend around $1k and get a DPMS LR-308. My rifle was sub moa out of the box. I miss it, but I also love my RRA 6.8 I traded for.

One other option to consider is the Remington SPS-Tactical. Its the 20" version of the sps-varmint but comes in a floated/pillar-bedded Hogue Stock. Typically can expect sub .5 moa with match loads and I was seeing about 1 Moa with Remington Core Lokts. I just got a new scope for mine so i'll have to go shoot again and see what it can really do.
But for under 600 I'm sure it will outshoot the Kimber and has a huge aftermarket following and leaves way more for top of the line optics.
If your stuck on the longer Barrel Buchman Gun and Pawn sells the Rem 700-P for under 800.
Sounds like Remington needs to use the Hogue stock that FN uses with the aluminum bedding block. One review of the sps tactical had 3 .3xx groups with federal ammo. Looks like a decent value.
I want to get something like that but I don't want to have to change out parts to get what I want. I would rather be able to buy it complete the way I want in an attempt to save a few bucks. Seems silly to buy a gun and then swap out the trigger and stock. Kind of like the way people buy 10-22s and then swap out every part. Crazy.

those groups were shot with the Hogue stock it comes in. It's pillar bedded. Mine has performed great and I still haven't got to run any match ammo through it.
