just bought this used, first Kawasaki I have owned could not give it a decent test ride (two flats with sidewall gashes) but it started up first try everything worked drove it up in the truck bed no problems. Get the tires on it and go for a test ride runs real good no noises engine runs smooth it just wont exceed 20-25 mph I pulled off the right side belt cove to check for trash in the belt found nothing? the air filter was ripped but ran the same even when I removed the air filter. There is a knob I beleive to be an Idle adjustment knob perhaps on the left side down by the pull start could that have anything to do with it? also there is a throttle stop bolt in the thumb lever I removed it for full throttle problem still there???????????? Any body come across this???

It's full-time 4WD, right? Is it in "low range"? I think it has "high" and "low" ranges. 20-25 would be top speed in the low range, I would think.

Then it's not shifting into the high range. There would be a VERY noticeable difference in those two ranges. Maybe it's not engaging properly. I'm not familiar at all with the machine, but it definitely sounds like you're not getting into "high".

By the way any one who reads this and can help me fix this pig without taking it to the dealership, will have themselves a parts guy at North central for the rest of their days as a show of gratitude ill hook anyone up on here anyway but if you work on these things daily we can work something out. -Corey

I have a kawasaki 360 prairie and you can definately feel a difference between high and low at any rpm range/ speed rang. If both feel the same id say its stuck in low. Hell the fourwheeler even sounds different in low.

Sounds good to me cause there is no noticable sound difference between the two what so ever. So what do I need to inspect, adjust or replace?

I'd bet it's not coming out of low like has been suggested... You can get diagrams of all the parts/systems from the Kawi site, and you might get a little more specific help form the Kawi board, both being linked below.

Being that I don't own a Kawi, much less a ATV, that's all I can do for ya ATM. That said, any chance you could get me a discount on an emergency brake cable for a Ranger? :o

Well I looked everything over last night and everything seems to be working properly but still no audiable change in sound when going from high to low.
I can take care of you on that ranger cable what year and which part of the cable are you lookin at?

Damn, sucks that you didn't find anything. If I get some time later, I'll see if I can find the specifics on how that transmission works.
The cable that I need is for an 04 Ranger 4x4. It's the small cable that splits off to the driver's side rear drum, just before the axle.

I just went and rode a 09 360 we have here .. and can tell a good difference between High and low .. even in 4 wheel drive ..
what year is the 400 I might beable to look at a service manuel and see if there is an adjustable linkage ..
