View Full Version : Glock finish question

OK so I picked up a Glock 22 from the old man a couple weeks ago and I got a question about the finish on the frame. It has that carbon fiber finish and he said when he first got it he had it 2 weeks and the finish started coming off real bad. He called Glock and sent it in under warranty and they re-did it. Two weeks after recieving it the same thing and he got it back and never worried about it.

Now I got it and noticed some wear on the end of the frame by the barrel and on the front of the trigger gaurd. He told me to send it back in but this crap is obviously not lasting so Im thinking about a third party to finish it. Any ideas on what to do or where to go?

The frame is polymer...it should not flake or come apart at all...Glock should replace the frame if that is the issue...

If you are really referring to the slide...it should have a Tenifer finish, which is typically very strong and durable. If that is coming off, Glock will refinish for a fee (I think about $50).

I have never seen a factory Glock with any finish that looked like carbon fiber...got pics?

Please post pictures of what you are referring to. I've never heard of a carbon fiber finish on a Glock before. I've carried my Glock 27 on me for close to 9 years now in a variety of holsters including several IWB holsters that puts it close to my body. I wear it while working on the yard and such so it gets sweaty and dirty yet I've never had a problem similar to what you are describing. You've got me curious now, post up some pics so we can see what you are talking about.

Yeah I never saw a finish like this before either but I know it came from Glock like this because like I said he has sent it back to them twice already. Both times were worse than this and he didnt even know about the chips till I noticed them when I bought it. The first two times were real bad chipping and stuff. This looks more like holster wear.

Oh and yeah, its got a laser on it, dont give me any flak. I didnt install it but it is fun to play with :o

Yeah I kinda like the finish but if its going to wear like this then Ill just see if they can get it back to black. Sucks though cause he paid extra for the finish when he bought it new. Owell.......

well, in the pics it doesn't look like the frame is actually chipping, but the finish is wearing off. Looks kinda like holster wear.

I guess contact Glock and see what they will do for you. If you want it to stay like that after you get it back, then I would not holster it, but keep it in some kind of protective box (Glock pistol case works well), and rarely shoot it. They may not replace the frame for a finish issue without charging some money, so be prepared for that.

Other than that, I've got nothing...

bah id just keep it the way it is and add some more wear to it with use. Its a freaking glock its not made to look good.

Its holster wear for sure. The chipping happened right after he bought it new. It was a lot worse than this.

Its not going to be a show gun or anything, I bought it to get my CHL with and carry it so it will get more wear Im sure. I may just leave it alone and deal with it depending on what glock says.

This is my first glock and I know they dont do the finish in house but this quality is lacking IMO. I never had issues like this with my old HK USP. I miss that pistol :(

You're going to be concealed-carrying a Glock 22? Might I suggest a 23 or 27? They're quite a bit smaller and easier to conceal.

BTW, I've got 3 Glocks with the traditional plain black finish, and carry my 29 in an Uncle Mike's cheapo holster daily, often times out and about when it's hot and I'm sweating, and it still looks like it did when I bought it new.

Yeah I know its a little big but it will do till I can get a sub-compact. I got a deal on this one and didnt pay anything out of pocket (he owed me some money) so thats why I ended up with this. Im already looking at UPS .40 compacts though :o

Nothing wrong with a Glock 23 or 27 (with grip extension). My sister has a 27, and it'll accept the same magazines as the 23 or 22.

Not opposed to a 27 either. HK doesnt offer a sub compact so that may be the way to go also.

The 23 is the perfect size. Anything smaller and I'd want it REAL small. Like drop it in the pocket small. Anything larger and fuck carrying it around.

the p2k is just as good ... my carry gun is a p2000 lem 9mm ... I am looking for a tan uspc .40 to replace my p2k with cause i like the idea of being cocked and locked ... but the lem trigger is damn good with no safetys

As for the carry value of your model 22, I carried one for 4 years before getting my model 19. After 2 years of the 19 I will tell you that from my perspective the difference is nominal. Carry your 22 in a great Galco tight on your hip and be the real man :-) Springfields are great, really, but if you have a Glock...carry it!

As for that carbon fiber finish now. Conceilment is the best thing for it, unless you want it to be camo'd against some rice burner, Honda hood down at the indoor car shows.

FWIW - I bought a 31 for carry. No regrets. Benefits of being skinny, maybe, but it doesn't show in my IWB holster. It was either that or a full-size, 5-inch Kimber Custom CDP. At the time, the Glock fit my budget much better.

If you leave that carbon finish on the frame, leave the worn spots. That way it'll look like you use it. ;)

Unless you are thinking of keeping the carbon fiber glock as a collector piece, I don't see any issue with a little wear on the finish.

Also, I have a Glock 23 and it's at the limit as far as size of what I think can be concealed comfortably.

I've always had a soft spot for the tan frame on the USPc. Not a fan of the grey though. I own a USPc in .40 and love it, not sure what HK ill get next, probably a USPCT or maybe a fullsize 9mm for the range.

The tan is my fave by far .... the only reason i would buy a grey frame is for the rarity. I prefer the tan by a long shot

we have a company that comes the the dealership and doest those finishes on interior/ext body parts. They say that after they apply the pattern they clear coat them with basic automotive paint. I wonder if the gun was done with any clear to protect it?

what model kimber? Series one or a series II ?? and are you a pimp?I was told by the guy behind the counter at Academy that if you buy this gun (the "pimp gun," as he called it):

http://gunutworld.net/RealGun/Handguns/Taurus/H_38SSSPRL.jpg,

you get a free Miami Hurricanes jersey and you have to shoot it sideways. It looks much, much worse in person than it does in that picture.
