After dividing up the rooms the wife has me cornered into putting the game room upstairs. This introduces the problem of lugging my jukebox, pinball machine and my bar-sized pool table upstairs. While thats do-able I am concerned about the loading. The jukebox is about 350-400lbs, pinball machine is probably 300lbs or more, and the pool table, even though its the small coin-op style is probably coming in around 600-700lbs.

The home is newer construction and is traditional style 2 level home with dormer roof windows. They used the manufactured 12" floor beams over the garage but they are not run throughout. The loads would be introduced on an area bout 18' x 18'.

What do you think? Do I need more construction info or should I just get another wife and put the gameroom where I want?

Be VERY careful. The roof is also tied into the load-bearing too. Do you have a buddy that's an engineer or architect? It might be worth a look before you just start lugging stuff up there. Typically, those joists'/beams they used are stronger than a 2X12, but the spacing is important, too.

From what I can see they only used the engineered joists over the attached garage. Am unsure why as that space is unfinished. The rest of the joists look like conventional framing with the joists running on 16" centers.

I prob need to get the original drawings from the city or get someone qualified to check this out first.

It would be a good idea. The good news, is that they prepared the attic for some weight. I use those very joists' between floors on two-story homes I build, and they can carry considerably more weight than a 2X12.

Screw that, pretend to look into it, tell her it can't support the weight and has to be on the ground floor. ;)
