WASHINGTON (AP) — The last House vote before a vacation usually sparks a stampede toward the doors and waiting planes. Not so Friday, when Republicans occupied the House floor for a rare, and at times bizarre, protest against Democratic energy policies.

The microphones were off, the House had stopped TV feeds to C-Span and the lights dimmed after the pre-noon vote to adjourn for the August recess. That didn't deter Republicans, who one after another rose to demand that Congress stay in session until it does something about high gas prices.

Unlike a normal session where the rules of decorum are strictly enforced, GOP lawmakers and their aides who filled the chamber clapped, chanted, gave standing ovations and booed the Democrats.

"Madame Speaker, where art thou?" shouted out Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas, in a glancing rhetorical shot at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. "Where oh where has Congress gone?"

It was a rare treat for tourists. Republicans invited many, in their shorts and sandals, into the chamber, usually strictly off-limits, to better hear the revivalist-like speeches.

Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., one of the organizers of the protest, said up to 40 of his fellow Republicans were prepared to keep the talk-in going. "I am prepared to stay here as long as we can," he said.

Republicans are angry that Democrats blocked them from a vote on allowing more off-shore oil drilling and increasing domestic oil supplies.

Democrats have faulted Republicans for obstructing their efforts to stop market speculation, press oil companies to develop the leases they have and force the president to release oil from the strategic petroleum reserve. The result is that Congress is leaving town without a comprehensive energy bill.

It's funny how they blame Exxon for making their money on expensive oil, but won't let us drill more to drop the price of oil? :confused: It's pretty much supply/demand economics. Will it happen next month? Nope. But in a year or two, it will start affecting the world supply.

You're such an easy target, I can't resist. "Already-owned" land, doesn't necessarily have oil on it. Do you think ALL land has oil on it? Shallow offshore rigs can produce within a year, some even quicker. ANWR maybe 5-6 years. Deeper offshore production may take 4-5 years. Why does it hurt to drill? ORLANDO, Florida (CNN) – Barack Obama said Friday that he would be willing to compromise on his position against offshore oil drilling if it were part of a more overarching strategy to lower energy costs.

“My interest is in making sure we've got the kind of comprehensive energy policy that can bring down gas prices," Obama told The Palm Beach Post early into a two-day swing through Florida.

"If, in order to get that passed, we have to compromise in terms of a careful, well thought-out drilling strategy that was carefully circumscribed to avoid significant environmental damage - I don't want to be so rigid that we can't get something done," Obama said.

The senator from Illinois has railed against offshore drilling since John McCain in June proposed striking down the federal moratorium banning offshore oil and gas drilling to help alleviate high gas prices.

“When I’m president, I intend to keep in place the moratorium here in Florida and around the country that prevents oil companies from drilling off Florida’s coasts,” Obama told reporters in Jacksonville in late June. “That’s how we can protect our coastline and still make the investments that will reduce our dependence on foreign oil and bring down gas prices for good.”

Even as recently as Thursday, Obama refused to cede any ground, calling McCain’s proposal “a strategy designed to get politicians through an election.”

“It's not going to provide short-term relief or medium-term relief or in fact long-term relief. It won't drop prices in this administration or in the next administration or in the administration after that,” Obama said while campaigning in Iowa.

But Friday Obama admitted that something is better than nothing and praised a bipartisan energy plan from the Senate that combines alternative energy innovation, financial, nuclear energy and drilling proposals. He noted he is still skeptical about drilling’s potential to lower gas prices or reduce dependence on foreign oil.

“The Republicans and the oil companies have been really beating the drums on drilling," Obama said in the interview with the Florida paper, "and so we don't want gridlock. We want to get something done.”

The McCain camp was quick to applaud Obama’s softening on the issue.

“It’s clear that members of both parties are following John McCain's leadership toward an ‘all of the above’ approach on energy that includes nuclear, alternative energy, and offshore drilling,” said a McCain spokesman. “We hope Barack Obama will realize that his ongoing opposition to John McCain’s realistic energy solutions and additional offshore drilling is wrong.”

Even though most of my stances on issues fall along the same as Conservatives, doesn't mean I'm blindly loyal to that party. Doing so would just be like "Independant-thinking suicide." I just want someone who gives a shit. Someone who makes decisions based on the best interests of this nation. If politicians stay on the course that they're on, I see government, as we know it, ending. I'm sure there are enough people like myself who are sick and tired of personal interests trumping best interests. I look for out for America's best interests. If there's something to hinder our society, then it needs to be addressed, either forcefully or diplomatically... this does not exculed our own government.

I just want someone who gives a shit. Someone who makes decisions based on the best interests of this nation. If politicians stay on the course that they're on, I see government, as we know it, ending. I'm sure there are enough people like myself who are sick and tired of personal interests trumping best interests. I look for out for America's best interests. If there's something to hinder our society, then it needs to be addressed, either forcefully or diplomatically... this does not exculed our own government.

That $1,485.55 per sec means nothing when you pay $4,114 in taxes per sec. or $32.361 billion for 2nd quarter taxes. When I started driving, fuel was the price per gallon of just the TAXES they now charge!
Besides the corporate taxes ($32 billion!) that our gov't makes from Exxon, they also get about .20 a gallon for the federal taxes at the pump.

first off I think this is an issue that should be left up to the states, and not the federal government.

2nd there is a compromise here, the democrats would be "OK" with drilling if the republicans agreed to restricting the speculation.

3rd this legislation has no provisions requiring that any oil found be for the American domestic market only, and not to be sold internationally.

Right now (today), 51% of Californians and 70% of Floridians are wanting to drill. Pelosi has chosen to ignore congress (including her own party), on any chance to even vote on this.

I agree with bill also, and from what i've been seeing I think that the american public is also seeing it this way, sort of a call to arms or a movement to reclaim our country from the econazis and oil dependence.

The politicians better wake up and get ahead of this movement or IMO they'll be holding their asses and wondering what happened on the next election.
