View Full Version : House republicans protest against democrats

WASHINGTON (AP) — The last House vote before a vacation usually sparks a stampede toward the doors and waiting planes. Not so Friday, when Republicans occupied the House floor for a rare, and at times bizarre, protest against Democratic energy policies.
The microphones were off, the House had stopped TV feeds to C-Span and the lights dimmed after the pre-noon vote to adjourn for the August recess. That didn't deter Republicans, who one after another rose to demand that Congress stay in session until it does something about high gas prices.
Unlike a normal session where the rules of decorum are strictly enforced, GOP lawmakers and their aides who filled the chamber clapped, chanted, gave standing ovations and booed the Democrats.
"Madame Speaker, where art thou?" shouted out Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas, in a glancing rhetorical shot at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. "Where oh where has Congress gone?"
It was a rare treat for tourists. Republicans invited many, in their shorts and sandals, into the chamber, usually strictly off-limits, to better hear the revivalist-like speeches.
Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., one of the organizers of the protest, said up to 40 of his fellow Republicans were prepared to keep the talk-in going. "I am prepared to stay here as long as we can," he said.
Republicans are angry that Democrats blocked them from a vote on allowing more off-shore oil drilling and increasing domestic oil supplies.
Democrats have faulted Republicans for obstructing their efforts to stop market speculation, press oil companies to develop the leases they have and force the president to release oil from the strategic petroleum reserve. The result is that Congress is leaving town without a comprehensive energy bill.
LOL I'm donating to Rep. Ted Poe

So let me get this straight...
The Repubs want to do something about the gas prices...
And the Dems went on vacation...and still blame high gas prices on the Repubs?
Fucking genius of them! Douchebags...

And who is it that needs to do this drilling? Exxon Mobil? The company that just set an all-time record for an american company?? And we are supposed to believe that if they don't, we won't have enough oil?? Or they won't be able to post a new record profit next year?

Obama won't make the trip. He's being more exposed every passing day. With comments like "air your tires up to conserve fuel", he's not long for this campaign. He's thrown down the race card now, and along with the denial of drilling off-shore, it will be his undoing

I've noticed the same thing. Just the other day he made a comment that he doesn't look like only of the previous Presidents. His Campaign was quick to claim that wasn't a racially charged comment and had nothing to do with his skin color.

maybe he can understand this...
If you have two apples to sell to your little friends for $1 each and you can make 10% profit...how much can you make selling your two apples?
Now, if you have 2 apples and they sell for $5 each, and you still make 10% profit...how much money can you make selling your two apples?
That is how this whole Exxon Mobile profit chain is working.... I learned it thanks to Bcoop :p

I doubt that. The race issue will be overlooked since it was thrown out there during the pastor issue. I doubt McCain's people saying that Obama is throwing the race card will hold, as well as McCain saying that Obama is like Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. Obama has an ad calling McCain old. HAHA. They both seem to have nothing better to do than to point fingers at each other over dumb shit right now.

It's funny how they blame Exxon for making their money on expensive oil, but won't let us drill more to drop the price of oil? It's pretty much supply/demand economics. Will it happen next month? Nope. But in a year or two, it will start affecting the world supply.
I stand by my point that just implying to OPEC that we WILL be drilling, is enough to move the price of oil 20-25%. Exxon makes a shit-ton of money with oil at $30 a barrel, too.

Do you think his "energy policy" will hold up with the American people? Do you know that as of yesterday, the majority of Californians AND Floridians (by a vast majority), are wanting off-shore drilling?

Do you not understand how the legislative branch works? There are two houses, the senate and the house of representatives. There are 100 senators that serve 6 year terms and 435 representatives that serve 2 year terms. The houses both have equal power but obviously individually the senators are more influential.
Obama, Hillary, McCain and even John Kerry are senators. They have nothing to do with the house of representatives unless there is pending legislation and they feel like over ruling them.

My goodness that's a lot of showboating. Now, other than a message to OPEC that "we can get our own thank yuuu" (which is good), what exactly are offshore leases going to do for us that millions of acres in already held but undeveloped domestic leases can't do? In fact, if there's not really a shortage of oil why would producing more effect the price? It makes for good campaign shit slinging but I can't buy the fact that the dems are actually why we mourn at the pump.

A lot of those "millions of acres", simply don't have oil. With 92 billion barrels confirmed in ANWR, I can see the difference.
By the way, I don't just blame the Dems for high gas/oil, but I DO blame the leadership for blocking the chance to even vote on it! Do you not see that? Nancy Pelosi on her own, has blocked the chance for her own party to vote, too. Many moderate Dems would vote for off-shore drilling. Even in California (Pelosi's state) the majority of people want to drill.

I agree. I wish the parties would/could stop with all the piss fighting and consider something besides themselves for a dare I say, change. And that would also require that at some point during their careers they would have to take a break from campaigning and posturing and actually take care of some governing for the good of the damned country.
I'm also all for knocking a few moose in the ANWR in the head too. I just want to know how it's actually going to benefit ME and not some nipanese fucker.

I assumed you meant that Obama wouldn't make the trip if Bush forced the house back into session, which of course he wouldn't being a senator and all.
It doesn't matter what Obama wants anyways since I don't see how he could possibly beat McCain. Once he has to debate his policy of "change" without any clue of how he plans to bring it about he'll be slaughtered by the well seasoned senator from Arizona. Listen to the soundclips when Obama is taken by suprise, he stutters worse than a drunken Irish whore on St. Paddy's day.

Nancy Pelosi has gone insane. That's really all there is to it. Now we can all understand the 9% congressional approval rating without any remaining ambiguity. Turn off the lights to subvert a vote to help make us more energy independent and defray the rising cost of energy.
I also read where Obama is gaining momentum from his trip abroad and is receiving international support.
This country is circling the drain. It was fun while it lasted.

All this drilling talk is great, but, Where are we going to get the riggs??? Ragen,Bush, and Haliburton sold off all the riggs to the Arabs. Thats the reason we ain't been drilling on the "allready owned" land. This crap of more drilling, is just another ay for Haliburton(remember the no bid contracts) to get more hooks into your ass.All the people involved(EXPERTS??), have said that more drilling will help, in about 15/20 years from now. We would be better off to kick all the polititions out, and start over (like King George W. wanted to do.)We'll probably get that chance when Prince John (McCain) is anointed with Bush money and is placed in the "throan room" in Washinkton.

The mere fact that congress would approve offshore drilling will in and of itself immediately drop oil prices.
I suspect that if the demand is there someone over here will begin to build rigs here again. Yet another positiive here, more jobs for americans, probably in places that have been hard hit by offshoring.
You know, even in 15/20 years there will still be a demand for gas & oil. Had clinton not banned drilling in ANWR 10 years ago that oil would now be coming online. Should you go to college? After all, there is no payback for at least 4-8 years, right? Many are saying that the "no oil in" 10-15-20 years is a crap number pushed out by the dems to support their position.

You're such an easy target, I can't resist. "Already-owned" land, doesn't necessarily have oil on it. Do you think ALL land has oil on it? Shallow offshore rigs can produce within a year, some even quicker. ANWR maybe 5-6 years. Deeper offshore production may take 4-5 years. Why does it hurt to drill? More jobs for folks, more oil for us and the world. Are you enjoying that $3.75 a gallon gas? Learn more about the topic, work on your spelling, punctuation, and vernacular, and maybe you'll be taken a little more seriously.

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/08/01/obama-shifts-on-oil-drilling/
ORLANDO, Florida (CNN) – Barack Obama said Friday that he would be willing to compromise on his position against offshore oil drilling if it were part of a more overarching strategy to lower energy costs.
“My interest is in making sure we've got the kind of comprehensive energy policy that can bring down gas prices," Obama told The Palm Beach Post early into a two-day swing through Florida.
"If, in order to get that passed, we have to compromise in terms of a careful, well thought-out drilling strategy that was carefully circumscribed to avoid significant environmental damage - I don't want to be so rigid that we can't get something done," Obama said.
The senator from Illinois has railed against offshore drilling since John McCain in June proposed striking down the federal moratorium banning offshore oil and gas drilling to help alleviate high gas prices.
“When I’m president, I intend to keep in place the moratorium here in Florida and around the country that prevents oil companies from drilling off Florida’s coasts,” Obama told reporters in Jacksonville in late June. “That’s how we can protect our coastline and still make the investments that will reduce our dependence on foreign oil and bring down gas prices for good.”
Even as recently as Thursday, Obama refused to cede any ground, calling McCain’s proposal “a strategy designed to get politicians through an election.”
“It's not going to provide short-term relief or medium-term relief or in fact long-term relief. It won't drop prices in this administration or in the next administration or in the administration after that,” Obama said while campaigning in Iowa.
But Friday Obama admitted that something is better than nothing and praised a bipartisan energy plan from the Senate that combines alternative energy innovation, financial, nuclear energy and drilling proposals. He noted he is still skeptical about drilling’s potential to lower gas prices or reduce dependence on foreign oil.
“The Republicans and the oil companies have been really beating the drums on drilling," Obama said in the interview with the Florida paper, "and so we don't want gridlock. We want to get something done.”
The McCain camp was quick to applaud Obama’s softening on the issue.
“It’s clear that members of both parties are following John McCain's leadership toward an ‘all of the above’ approach on energy that includes nuclear, alternative energy, and offshore drilling,” said a McCain spokesman. “We hope Barack Obama will realize that his ongoing opposition to John McCain’s realistic energy solutions and additional offshore drilling is wrong.”

You know... I've lost the whole "Republican vs. Democrat" drive a while ago. Even though most of my stances on issues fall along the same as Conservatives, doesn't mean I'm blindly loyal to that party. Doing so would just be like "Independant-thinking suicide." I just want someone who gives a shit. Someone who makes decisions based on the best interests of this nation. If politicians stay on the course that they're on, I see government, as we know it, ending. I'm sure there are enough people like myself who are sick and tired of personal interests trumping best interests. I look for out for America's best interests. If there's something to hinder our society, then it needs to be addressed, either forcefully or diplomatically... this does not exculed our own government.
Contrary to what people think, there's still enough people who actually give a shit to make the difference. Too bad the media clouds the thruth more times than not.

And that's the truth.

Looks like the republicans are going to start back up again on monday. You have to love pelosi's comments about the republicans:
"What you saw in the Congress this week was the war dance of the hand maidens of the oil companies," Pelosi said. That's what you saw on the Republican side of the aisle."
What a dumb bitch; I can't wait until the next election rolls over her like a tidal wave.

LOL at all the people blaming exxon mobile for making a profit when I bet you never saw what they paid in taxes. That $1,485.55 per sec means nothing when you pay $4,114 in taxes per sec. or $32.361 billion for 2nd quarter taxes. Hell and pelosi and her goons are wanting to take away the tax breaks on oil companys. BTW exxon is talking about pulling out of the gasoline industry since they only make <10c per gallon sold now they are losing money out they ying-yang on it.
Anyone know where Pelosi will be vacationing? Id like to meet her up somewhere for a face to face altercation ;)

When I started driving, fuel was the price per gallon of just the TAXES they now charge!
Besides the corporate taxes ($32 billion!) that our gov't makes from Exxon, they also get about .20 a gallon for the federal taxes at the pump.

first off I think this is an issue that should be left up to the states, and not the federal government.
2nd there is a compromise here, the democrats would be "OK" with drilling if the republicans agreed to restricting the speculation.
3rd this legislation has no provisions requiring that any oil found be for the American domestic market only, and not to be sold internationally.

Right now (today), 51% of Californians and 70% of Floridians are wanting to drill. Pelosi has chosen to ignore congress (including her own party), on any chance to even vote on this.

I agree with bill also, and from what i've been seeing I think that the american public is also seeing it this way, sort of a call to arms or a movement to reclaim our country from the econazis and oil dependence.
The politicians better wake up and get ahead of this movement or IMO they'll be holding their asses and wondering what happened on the next election.
