I'm headed across country this weekend, and in between taking turns driving, it'd be nice to have internet access on my laptop on the way. I have sprint, and thought about using that somehow, but kinda wondering if there are any other options. anyone got any ideas?

If you have sprint get one of these (http://nextelonline.nextel.com/NASApp/onlinestore/en/Action/SubmitRegionAction) and use it. If not try tethering your phone.

air card?
If you have a Data package and your phone supports it, you can tether it.
If not, you can get an aircard. Free card+$40 activation fee+$59 per month (including a one year service contract). If you want it solely for this trip, it'd be a hellacious expense.

If it's just for the trip, tether that shit. I have an aircard and I'm not seeing much of a speed difference between it and my handset when tethered.

Either with a USB data cable or using Bluetooth. There is software readily available at Fry's (or even cheaper on Ebay) for most phones that allows you to use the network's data capability and a data cable to make your phone function as a modem for internet access (provided you have a data plan or you will get a bill that will horrify you  )..and most bluetooth phones can do it wirelessly provided you have the right drivers installed on your laptop and an internal or external bluetooth card. You can get some pretty good speeds when tethering using a good phone and a good network.
