Anything i can do? i called microsoft and got the "sorry 'bout cha" speech. I wasnt really aware my console (2nd hand) was modded, but surely there has to be some kind of software out there to get around this. Is this a permanent ban on their end and im fucked no matter what i do? or is this reversable once i apply a "mod-hider" program that will allow me to connect in.

PS3 ftw :p
Not sure what games you play I read on Bungie.net they have autodetect for modded boxs and they ban you from ever playing their games online. You should be able to find out if its a 1month ban, but for modded xboxs and they caught it most likely its a permaban. If you got it from gamestop used I ask for a exchange, but if you where cheating youll have to deal with it and get a new one.

After a little bit of googling it looks like you probably need a newer version of the firmware from whoever modded it. where to find that I have no idea.

i might try to go up to gamestop and exchange it for another xbox, and keep the hard drive.

if you got banned on xbl it's gonna be permanent. if you wanna play on live, you'll have to get another xbox.

Does it also ban marketplace stuff and so forth? Or just online play?

use to, on the original Xbox, you could change the eprom and be able to get back on, but I think MS is now far beyond that now...

that bad new is your xbox is permanately banned. the only thing you can do is get another one if you want to use xbox live.
the good news is you can burn and play backups of games.

I dunno, the xbox live is one thing this console has going for it. All the various movies, games and such help make the Xbox360 a good platform - I'd get another one. If I felt compelled to mod it - I'd do it myself in a way that I felt was safe. (if there is a way)

just use backups for offline play.
the ixtreme firmware that you flash on the dvd drive to play backups disables itself if there is an original xbox 360 disc in there. so if you are going to play on xbox live make sure you pay for the game (which you should do anyway for any game you enjoy).
there's no guarantee that microsoft won't find a way to detect it in the future but from what i've heard for now it is pretty safe.

i found a solution to the problem. The shitty part is that a ton of xbox's sold around the world do NOT have legit firmware on them, especially in asia. Guys over there are getting shafted, because for the most part, no one even SELLS fully legit versions of the console or the games themselves.
