Over the past year or so, I've been wanting to build this HT room. We have a building behind the house that would be perfect for this purpose. When it's all said and done, the room will be about 18.5'x14.5' Plenty of room for a HT set up. The first problem is that the building has always been used for storage, so I had to find something to do with all that crap :(
Couple of weeks ago, we had a garage sale. Sold off about 80% of the junk we've colected over the years and never touch
Yesterday, with the help of Cool Cat, another storage building was erected. Remainder of the crap(Christmas decorations, lawn mower, misc crap) will go into this new storage building. I plan to start moving everything in there next week when I get back from California. Once that is finished, the real fun begins :D
As of now, the building is divided into 3 seperate rooms. The load bearing walls are all on the outside. Demolition will begin as soon as all of the crap is moved out.
My plan:
Remove dividing interior walls
Rip up all flooring
Repair sheetrock on walls and ceiling(from removal of walls)
Close up windows-Not quite sure how I want to handle this yet. Should I cover them up so they are reusable later on down the road, or just get rid of them all together?
Close up 1 door-There are 3 exterior doors total, I only plan to keep 2 of them.
Paint walls-Trying to decide on colors now, but will be darker colors.
New trim-Crown and base boards.
Carpet
Install all equiptment!! :D
This should be a long but rewarding experience. As most of you know, my free time is limited, but I'm figuring 2-3 months until completion. I would like it if I could get some help, so if any of you guys care to throw a hand in, I would greatly appreciate it. I can't afford to pay you cash money. But when the room is completed, you are more than welcome to come over anytime and use it.
So thats it. I plan to add pictures as the progress continues. Guess this is sort of an "on-going" thread :D

Sounds cool man, I also am thinking of starting a little theater room project. Take some before pics too so we can see where you came from. It sounds like you've got a lot of work ahead but it'll be cool to watch it progress.
Best of luck.

I'd just sheetrock over the windows on the inside, lock 'em, pull the shades down, and leave 'em there.. it's a lot harder to put them in, than pull some rock back and have them sittin there.

If you have any questions let me know. I just completed ours about 6 months ago and have quite a bit of experience with theater setups, front projectors and a decent amount of audio equipment. It's just been a hobby since I got out of the car audio thing. I'd be more than willing to help with placement of speakers, etc.. Crazy, but I actually LIKE to do it.
In our room, we actually have horizontal plantation shutters from a previous owner. It's nice because we can block out 99% of the light with them shut for movies, but we will usually keep one open in the rear of the room when watching sports or something where you don't want it that dark.
Light control. Lutron IR dimmers and a decent Logitch Harmony remote is nice. You can get the 880 for around $90 after rebate through Amazon (http://www.slickdeals.net/permadeal/13196/Logitech-Harmony-880-Advanced-Universal-remote-85-After-50-Rebate). I like that one better than the one I have since it auto lights whenever you pick it up. Plus the color screen is nice for a sub-$100 controller. It will control nearly everything you have, including the IR lights.

Thank you sir!
I'm already set with the equiptment that I need, including a Harmony 890 ;)
I will however, be needing some help with acoustics :D

I would like to hear the finished product for sure.
I'm assuming that since it's going to be a media room, it will probably be more focused on the video aspect, rather than music?
Thinking about putting up any deadening material on the walls to keep the sound from bouncing around? What's the room look like? How big is it?

Size of the room will be about 18.5x14.5
I will be trating the room with some accoustics. But right now, my main goal is just getting it built :D

You are aware that dimmer switches, unless very well filtered, send noise to your audio equipment, right?

Here are some pictures from our mostly completed room. Picasa (http://picasaweb.google.com/patrickgans/ProjectorRoom) We still have to frame the screen, do some deadening work, and clean up the wiring.
And if you look closely that is a sub behind the front right speaker.

Of course. First, it's not a problem most would notice anyway, but it's pretty easily remedied by making sure the lighting system is on a separate breaker, attempting to maximize the distance from the dimmer to the equipment to reduce the RFI interference, and keeping the surround wiring away from anything on the circuit. Plus using a power conditioner will help. With all that being said, I could not notice any difference from the time I installed everything without that consideration to the time after the power conditioner and wiring changes were made. Even the "no input" test with the receiver at high volume did not change at all. This is with the dimmer circuit around 7' away from my AV equipment.

Looks good! I bet that was a lot of work, but definitely worth it once it is done.
