Ross Avenue has been part of downtown Dallas long before the high rises went up but that could change.

The new push: Cesar Chavez Boulevard.

The effort began when the name was passed over from Industrial Boulevard.

The 3.5 mile street runs through historic downtown into Old East Dallas.

From skyscrapers to mom and pop shops, the street offers a colorful look into the city's history and culture.

The Cesar Chavez Task Force is now pushing to rename Ross Avenue in honor of the farm worker advocate.

“Ross seems to be very open for this opportunity,” said Alberto Ruiz from the Cesar Chavez Task Force. “For the Latino community, in particular for the larger community, because who Cesar Chavez was and what he stood for.”

But what does Ross stand for? The answers are at the Dallas Public Library. Ross Avenue has been around for more than 130 years.

Carol Roark from the Dallas Public Library told News 8 that the avenue is named after William W. and Andrew J. Ross, early land owners who came to Dallas in 1866. One was a Civil War veteran, but both men were farmers and real estate developers.

Their contributions are hard to find.

“They were early Dallas settlers and a lot of streets in Dallas are named for people who are important early on and we have forgotten about them,” said Roark.

The Chavez task force says it hasn't forgotten.

It plans to honor the Ross brothers with their own landmark, if they get to rename the road.

The name change proposal will be presented at the next, Trinity River Corridor Project meeting, August 5th. For more information on the task force: Cesar Chavez Task Force

They should change the name of Ross to:

"The city of Dallas owes gpamp at least 3 new tires for tires destroyed on what used to be called Ross Ave."

That has got to be the worst major road in Dallas.

Does somebody have a gravel driveway they can let these pinheads name after their hero? Obviously they aren't going to just go away.

Ross isn't known for prostitutes. However, coincidentally, you can find a lot of illegal labor on Ross, near Haskell. One time, I made a u-turn because I didn't notice the 7-11 until I passed it. I used the old purple building (no idea what it's called), and my car was rushed by SEVERAL Mexicans, thinking I needed work done.

Thus, Dallas should leave the street named as it is currently, in memory of a white man.

Up through the early Eighties, Ross Avenue, east side of 75, was one of those places.

Heck just name it Obama Avenue. He'll be the next president and we will all be happy.

Good god at all these advocacy groups trying to redecorate our landscape and erode OUR culture. Wanting to change a street name that's 130 years old?, silly.

I guess the phrase give an inch and they'll take a mile applies here and elsewhere. Somewhere someone capitulated to the whims of one of these advocacy groups and it opened Pandora's box. Now this country's news is replete with this type of community activism that basically wants to sublimate Anglo Saxon culture to a multi-ethnic hodgepodge.

Hey, we've ostensibly liberated Iraq from tyranny. I want to submit a proposal to rename the main drag in Baghdad to the George Bush Parkway.

That way, if you were riding with someone, and told them to go down "Off Road", they wouldn't be surprised when their shocks go out.

Its obvious the City doesn't listen to the people. They took an online vote to rename Industrial, and everyone said "name it Cesar Chavez", and the City of Dallas said "um... ok... maybe not.

Ross is a pretty historic street. It'd be silly to change it. I understand Industrial. It's not so much a name as it is a label.

I distinctly remember making this point over and over again at multiple points throughout the past few years, and was blown off as a "closed minded right wing nut." I'd really like to ask those same people what they think of this situation.

Good news.

It was narrowly voted down 7 - 6. Ross Ave. stays Ross Ave. That's done.

However, now they are going to go after renaming Industrial Blvd.

However, now they are going to go after renaming Industrial Blvd.

The César Chávez Task Force agreed back in June to go along with naming Industrial Boulevard something other than “César Chávez,” provided the city name another street after their beloved communist hero. I would recommend naming the entrance road to the city dump after him.

Hear hear!

Let's rename Industrial "Karl Marx Boulevard", and Ross Avenue can be "Hillary Clinton Road".
