View Full Version : I need a new range

Today the Maytag range went kaput! It is out of warranty and it was a cheap ass range to begin with so it looks like I'll be shopping for a new one tomorrow.

I want to find a stainless steel range that is $500 to $700. I plan to check the Sear outlet and Kellum & Sons down in Dallas. Does anyone have any other suggestions for good appliance stores that have reasonable prices? I've already check Home Depot and Lowes. Their selection was pretty sparse.

Thanks

Fry's has a pretty nice selection and they're always extremely competitive. I've never seen a good deal of any kind at a Sears Outlet - specifically the Grapevine Mills store.

Yep, Frys is on my list to check out too.

They've got that Frigidaire set for sale again. I'll have to check and see if it is worth a damn.

We're planning to sell the house in a couple of years when the new Lake Lewisville toll bridge is completed (property values are expected to rise when it is done) so I'm looking to at least buy some decent stuff. I have to keep my wife from pushing me down to buy the cheap ass shit but I have to avoid the really expensive shit because our house is the most "affordable" in the neighborhood. I figure we'll buy a range and overhead microwave now and buy a dishwasher and fridge later.

Ok, so Sears outlet is out.

I'm going to check Expo and Great Indoors (looking for open box deals). I guess Costco might have some non-kirkland ranges so I'll check them out.

The problem for me is that now we're on microwave or griddle cooking for until we get a new range. The wife wants her oven because she is a baking machine.

So, any other suggestions guys?

I have got some pretty good deals on stainless ranges thru Craigslist for my investment property and one to put in my old place because we wanted to take our Thermador with us.

If you plan to sell your home and don't plan to take the range with you CL might be a good solution.

Well I got a little lucky and found an open box deal on a Kitchenaid stainless steel electric oven. Retail is about $1200 but we got it at Best Buy for $689.

I like Kitchenaid to begin with so we went with that. Not a scratch on it either.

So it looks like I'll be upgrading everything from white appliances to stainless steel. We were planning on doing that anyways just not this soon. I'm going to just buy things a piece at a time. Next up is a microwave and then a dishwasher. I may wait until I get my next tax refund before buying the fridge.

BTW, I did check CL this morning (to me, CL is a given) but nothing struck my interest when I looked. No biggie. I'll keep looking for the other appliances.

Pics to come Monday after delivery.. Thx for the suggestions.

edit: This is the range we bought.

Update:

So I got the new range and microwave. I installed the microwave last Sunday and got the range installed on Monday. Now I've finished painting the kitchen (and cleaning it)

I've still got a few things to do:
Replace the dishwasher and fridge (I'm keeping and eye on Craigslist)
Replace the window treatments (doesn't go with the new color)
Paint or replace the cabinets.
Replace the cabinet tops.

This is what my kitchen looked like originally. This picture was taken in 2003 and looked exactly like this up until last week.

And here is my kitchen now:

I like the green. How did you make the edge between the green and the ceiling?

By hand.

painters tape doesn't work worth crap on textured walls.

Damn. I can't imagine making straight edges by hand.

The house has gas but the line only runs to the fireplace, furnace, and water heater. The cost of getting a line to the kitchen just isn't worth it. Otherwise that is exactly what I would have purchased.

Weird thing though, my wife thinks Electric ranges/ovens are better than gas. I think that might be a Japanese thing. Electric stove tops are a lot more common over there.

My next house WILL have a gas range.

I will say that the Kitchenaid with its convection oven is pretty damn kickass. We made up a batch of monkey bread yesterday and it was done much faster than in our old oven.

That's odd. I HATE electric, when talking ranges. To me, gas is much easier to manage heat. Guess it's all in personal preference. Coming from Japan, that's probably why electric is her preference.

That is exactly my thinking too. I gave her a WTF look when she told me that.

The only exception is one of those new induction ranges. Those MF'ers are the shit. Of course they cost a friggin fortune too. Maybe I'll go for an electrolux after we get into another house.

Yea, something like that would be great when I get a cookin' itch. I end up going all coonass with gumbo, jambalaya, breadpuddin, and maybe even a small batch of crawfish.

Hmm, I wonder how quickly an IC range can boil a 5 gallon pot :D

As with anything, there's high end and low end shit.

This is commercial stuff, but we have single hob induction ranges that cost $3500, and we've got one that costs $150.

Honestly, the $150 performs decently, as long as it's not something that is being used all day every day.
