Here's my prob: I got a Dell machine that USB ports don't work. When I plug in my thumb drive and try to open it in explorer, it freezes. When it doesn't freeze, it takes forever to open items on the drive or doesn't open them at all. I've tried different ports, but it still freezes. None of my USB scanners work either. I get a device failure or "USB device not recognized."

I thought that maybe it was something in the OS or something I installed, so I took the HDD out, and put a new one in, reloaded windows XP, and plugged in my thumb drive after installing all new drivers and updates, but I have the same issue. I tried plugging in and installing one of the scanners, but again, same issues.

Is it possible that some hardware failure could cause all USB ports to fail? Is there a way to test the USB ports? Should I try to buy a USB PCI card or hub?
