Laurren Smith
Age: 12
Osteosarcoma Bone Cancer in her right femur
Diagnosed 8/21/07
Laurren is a cheerleader and was diagnosed with a 12cm by 8cm tumor on her right femur that covered 1/3 of her bone. She had pain in her knee for about 10 days before we took her in to get x-rays on her leg. While we thought she had a fracture in her knee, the doctor informed us that she had a tumor in her bone and instructed us to go to Children's Hospital in Dallas immediately. Upon arrival to the hospital, more xrays were taken and late that evening is when we were informed our daughter had cancer. Laurren had 6 rounds of very extensive chemo then she had surgery to remove the cancerous tumor on November 19, 2007. She had 1/2 of her femur removed and her knee was removed and replaced with a prosthetic femur and prosthetic knee. Laurren had more chemo treatments after surgery until she started having heart failure in December due to the side effects of the chemo. She has been unable to finish her treatments because the risk factors are too high in causing more damage to her heart. Laurren is currently on a maintenance chemo to finish her protocol.
