Well after my work out of Shoulders, Biceps and abs i weighed in. I wasnt expecting any different results because the last 3-4 weigh-ins i have weighed in around 148-149 never making it to 150. :o So to my surprise i jumped on the scale like i always do before i leave and i weighed in at 151.3. :D

I know im probably retaing water but i really dont care. The scale has never displayed 150+ with my ass on it, ever. So im pretty excited to finally know that 4 months ago i was 137 with jeans and shoes on and all this ass busting has paid off.

When i first started i could barely bench 135, 5 times. Now i can throw it up 12 times with a max of almost 200(didnt quite make it. i got it up but couldnt get my arms in the completely extended "lock position".) Ill get it next week though. :D

165 - 170 Here i come!

Not sure how far Euless is for you but Don and I(Matt and Jimmy as well but they havent been coming lately) have been working out at 24hour off of West Parkway. Youre more than welcome to join up if you like. I had to work out by myself today and not having a spot sucks. (I cant push myself as hard as i like) :o So the more people there the better. :D

I struggle with the last few but i get to about 15 before it gets sloppy. :D I normally dont do that much weight. I was able to do 4 plates for 20 with no problem, full shrug for all 20 and even 5 second pauses on the last 5 or so. So i figured what the hell tried +1 plate on each side and i surprised myself.

Good job Mike. I know exactly how hard it can be to put on weight. I managed to put on 15lbs in 3 months while I was in Florida, but as soon as I got back home I quit going to the gym and it all went away. :(

I need to take my lazy ass back.

Glad to see that you hit 150 Mike. That said, I too would like to see these 315lb barbell shrugs. Granted, it was after 4 sets of heavy dumbell shrugs, but the last time I did barbell shrugs with 315 I struggled to get 10. Did I mention that I outweigh you by 56lbs...

Maybe it was a miscalculation on my behalf. Ill have to check the next time i go to gym. :o
For shrugs i usually start with 1 plate on each side, do 20 with couple second pauses, work my way up to 2 plates and just finish my trap exercise with 2plates. This is the first time i attempted 3 plates.

Also, its not barbell nor the press bar, its the machine(not smith machine, dont know the name) but its still 3 plates on each side. I cant do olympic bar without straps so i had to resort to the "machine".

LOL, that machine is a joke, but makes much more sense to the weight ratio.

I think I know my shrugs, considering it's one of my favorite exercises.
BTW: I trap pull 6 plates on each side free weight(585 lbs) for sets of 10.
CLEAN pulls with holds, I would say 5 plates on each side.
Good luck and keep it up!
Just don't quit...like everyone else does.

I dont plan on stopping until i reach my goal165-170. I would probably be a lot closer to my goal(s) if it wasnt for all these obstacles in between (torn cartledge, stomache flu, depression etc. blah blah.) Those are just excuses though and arent going to help me put on mass. :D

Not like I do it bro.
I used to personal train back in the day as well(cooper's clinic certified) and worked at a few gyms through college.
But then I figured out, there ain't no real $$$ in this game and everyone's a fu*kin know-it-all.
So now I just keep to myself and watch others.
I learn new stuff everyday(without people even knowing I am watching/learning).
Next week, whenever I hit that bodypart, I might give the new technique a try.
What works best for one, might not work best for another.
To me, it's all about personal preference on what works best.

Come workout with me...I'll show you what a "jerk" is vs. a true shrug.
I jerk 585lbs, I shrug 315-405.

Nope. That thing is quite a bit easier to put weight on than doing regular barbell shrugs. For reference, I've put up 6 plates on that thing for reps, and don't hit over 4 on the barbell. Machines are always easier than their free-weight counterpart, but the chance of injury is less.

Incorrect!

I've done a few machines that said I was doing only 165 lbs, but would end up pulling me out of the seat...I'm 190lbs. That's why alot of machines dont even have their weight values, just reference numbers so you can keep track of what wheight setting you use. I agree that most are easier, but not always the case.

Very true and a valid point.
But in general, Raven is correct.
But anyways weight is just a number!
Basically, just a moot point to work past.

Pound for pound, machines generally offer some type of mechanical advantage over the equivalent free movement. Period.

Yea, it's called leverage!
Machines difficulty level mainly depends on the angle of the pulleys,
and also the number of pulleys entailed into the machine's design.

ruffdaddy
06-27-2008, 12:46 PM
Pound for pound, machines generally offer some type of mechanical advantage over the equivalent free movement. Period.

Period...meaning there is no argument...

Mechanical advantage is the multiplication of an input force, then transferred or applied elsewhere with either a greater magnitude. Unless the apparatus is designed in terms of distance (which it generalyl isn't in weight lifting).

If I have 165 lbs, and it takes +190lbs there is no mechanical advantage in terms of ease of weight.

I know you're a very educated athlete, lets not get these guys confused if they're starting out. While it is true that in most cases it seems easier to lift the same weight on a machine, this is because there isn't as much a necessity for secondary supportive muscles. And the force follows a set trajectory. But some machines are proportined differently.

Dont compare weight on a machine to any other weight...only compare it to how it feels, and determine what you should be lifting by your max rep range.

347Mike
06-27-2008, 01:00 PM
The "Hammer Strength" wide bench machine, i can push 2 plates on each side with another +15 on each side for 8.

If that were on olympic bar that would be what, 255? lol

So yeah id say some machines are considerably easier.

The Raven

Period...meaning there is no argument...

There is no argument. Regardless of what a machine is marked in terms of weight, it takes less effort to lift 100lbs on a machine than with the equivalent free weight movement. The only one that is confused is you.

The only case that it would be more difficult would be that the machine is in a state of disrepair, and a pulley or two is binding or something of that nature.

Oh I'm not confused...I know exactly what mechanical advantage is...haha.

It's a simple IO funtion in regards to distance or force.

But there's no sense in arguing with you because either you're looking at a different aspect of mechanical advantage or dont know what the true deffinition is (which i highly doubt).

Well part of the difficulty, for me, on free weight bench vs. a machine, you have to focus on keeping the weight balanced.

Come on now:) you are a mechanical engineer:) thats because of leveraged, hell 150lbs tricep pull downs feel like they are going to pull me off my feet.

The reason most machines are easier and safter is range of motion. They isolate your range of motion so that they eliminate Stabalizing muscles. They lock you into a fixed and finite range of motion and just dont give you the freedom that freeweights do. That being said, there are a few machines i prefer over freewights because of this safety factor, but to each his own.

haha....that's exactly why i dont see the need to continue arguing. I'm looking at a mathematical point of view when referring to Mechanical Advantage. Which is a very simple yet strict definition/formula.

And I prefer machines alot as well for the isolation alone. But I still think free weights are crucial.

Hows the shoulder coming btw?

Its a good feeling when people take notice. Ive had a couple of those lately and it feels great. I also put on a shirt this morning that used to be "loose" and my biceps actually fill in the shirt now. Time to go shopping! :D
the best way to fill a shirt.. is to buy a smaller one:)

thats why i wear 5 and 6x:) i always have a arm goal
lol.

shoulders doing better ( knock on wood)
was able to push up 315 on seated military yesterday.
put it under 505 on the bench for a few reps a while back but am stick to 405 till i can get my sets of 12-15 back. You ever train in the plano gym any more?

Sounds good! Wish i was "stuck to 405" haha.

I will probably start going to the gym in plano again over the next few weeks!

Where the hell have you been recently? you taking a break from the forums or have I just missed your posts...haha

well im not really stuck there.. just taking it slow. The shoulder held up to 505 for a few a month or so ago, just not eager to push it yet. it will hold 315 on seated military.

where have i been? working.. havent been posting much.

Do you train at the plano 24hr that has the deadlift platform?
There's a good friend of Ken Anderson (Titan Gear) that trains with him there and always ask me to come train with them over there. I see him in my gym sometimes over here.
I really want to because he's going to let me try some Titan gear out. I only use Inzer at the moment.
