What do you all think? I think Hughes wins but i would not be suprised to see Alves take it. Hughes may come in thinking its in the bag and get KO'd.
I also think that Mike Swick vs Marcus Davis will be fight of the night. :D

Not sure. Alves is no slouch for sure, but I'm not sure he's up to par with Matt Hughes.
If Matt Hughes comes in underestimating Alves, he'll go down.

Being a long time Hughes fan, I'm betting on Alves. Hughes is done. He was done at his last fight. He might as well be wearing a shirt that says "I don't want to be here anymore."

Agreed. I also read on Matts webstite that win, lose,or draw he gets Matt Serra next! That may play a factor he may come in way to relaxed

Ouch thats kind of rough. I think that Hughes just got a little to full of himself (like Chuck did) and i think that after being humbled he may be stronger than ever.

Honestly that's a tough one to call, I like both fighters. But if I have to pick one, I'd say Swick
Starts in a few hours. The fight I'm most looking forward to is Marquardt vs Leites.
What is it with fair weather fans? Hughes is done or not any good? Gimme a break. Hughes is only "done" is if his game stops evolving. The game is getting more advanced and the veterans need to advance with it to stay competitive. He's not so old that he cannot compete physically, but some fighters to stay with what they know when they have had alot of success. There is no greater killer to a fighter then complacency. But because he's lost that luster of being unbeatable and the cracks in his game have been exposed, he's done? Please stop with that nonsense.

Once again JKD, I'm not sure if you actually pay attention to what's been going on in MMA... Hughes didn't look like he even showed up for that fight. He's definately not in the same mindset he once was. He took this fight for the paycheck, and to help make a card for the UFC.

I agree on the marcus davis, but swick does gas if he doesn't get a 15 second knockout.

Oh I do. I'm just trying to give a guy the benefit of doubt because he is/was a dominating champion. You're kinda saying the same thing, it's mindset thing. It's not that he's not physically capable of being competitive, it's a mindset thing that he's gotta evolve with the sport and add more to his arsenal.
You and I are saying kinda the same thing, just going different ways about it. :)

Hughes fights Serra, which is his grudge fight, then he retires. He only took this fight for the guarante of a Serra fight.
He's ready to retire back to the farm, and be done. As far as mindset, his mindset is, "i'm ready to retire"

At this rate, Serra will walk through Hughes. He looked so desperate for just a take down with Alves. I'm surprised he didn't take a knee to the head sooner. I just hate to see a guy I liked so much go out like that, desperate, and it wasn't just this fight. He knows he's too hard headed to evolve, he should have retired sooner.

Leites should have let go of Nate's leg. The intended move isn't illegal. In fact, it leads to a very nice guard pass. Leites should have ended up on his back and Nate would have gone right into a double leg stack pass.
It could have gone very wrong but at Leites was smart enough to get his right elbow down before his head hit the mat. It looked to me like Nate underestimated the strength and length of Leites' arms.
I know Nate personally. I don't train with him anymore but I know that he wouldn't intentionally try to end someone's career. That just isn't him. There is a lot of bullshit circulating about how he is a dirty fighter. The guy is an absolute Boy Scout and Greg Jackson wouldn't tolerate that kind of thing from his fighters.

Matt Hughes hasn't got a fire in him anymore. He just kept trying to take Alves down and didn't even try and stand. He just seems to be calling in his fights and thinking that he is just going to find a way to win. Guys are to good now and you can't do that.
I thought Mike Swick fought a smart fight.
Nate got robbed, I want to see Nate vs Hendo!

^^ rumors that he might move up to 205 and fight Liddell at UFC 88. we'll see though..
Dana has a big announcement on Thursday's show. Something to "shock" the mma world. His past announcements haven't been as good as he hyped them up, so i'm not expecting much from this one.

He's annoucing that him and Tito are broken up for good this time. Dana is such a tool. The guy really likes to hear himself talk. I hope that Mark Cuban really gives him a run for his money with HDnet.

I would not bet on HDnet being the major force to deal with...issues with their business model.

That sucks to hear. Seems we have another WWE on our hands and a monopoly. Competition is always good for consumers/fans, a monopoly brings complacency.

Hopefully Mark Cuban comes to reality and figures that HDNET is a TV station, and not a fight promotion, and splits the two

Exactly...one of my managing directors (who just left my company) talked with Mark for a few hours the other night about his company and interning for him for free (thinking about starting his own fight company or offshoot of somehow capitalizing on MMA) and we talked about this exact thing.

I really think he's done some great things with HDNET, and the fights they show, as well as Inside MMA. But as long as HDNET Fights is completely associated with HDNET, it's going to get harder and harder to have good fights televised from the competition.
As for his fight promotion, it needs to be a seperate entity, with a good name, strong matchmaking, scouting and staff. There's a hell of a market to even keep it local for a while, by doing smaller shows, more local fighters, some tournament events, etc. Even if they are at the ACC, I'm sure he gets a deal for his promotions ;)

noone will overtake the UFC.
Not Affliction, not IFL, not HDnet fights, not Elite XC, not Strikeforce, not Dreams, not Sengoku, not Bodog fight ................NOONE
UFC will be #1 forever
nate, your friend is a bandwagoner. Tell him to get in line with the rest of the people trying to make a quick buck off MMA. lmao Tell him to get ready to lose a bunch of money if he tries to start a new promotion. Elite XC and IFl have lost millions and millions over the past year or 2. They still arent making a profit and they both have/had tv deals. Good luck

He's not jumping in to some half assed thing, he's a very smart business man, made upwards in the tens of millions of the last business he started. He's looking at options on how to break into MMA in some sort of action, may end up opening up a school.

the only people who have made money from a major mma promotion in the US and A is Zuffa and even then it took them 3-5 years before they showed ANY profit whatsoever. I'm too lazy to look around, but you can google the figures if you want.
Opening a school might be a good option if he gets the right guys in there. Even then, this market is flodded with schools already. He would have to buy a branch off a big name school like Couture, Quest, ATT, and so on to stand out in this area..
I'm sure he knows what he is doing but there are a few other people with money who tried to "compete" with the UFC and didnt fare too well. His buddy only had 2 shows before bowing out. lol

He was one of the founders of a company I work for and he found out I like MMA from my director and we just kinda hit it off from there. Talking about flying us out to the Affliction card so if he wants to I'll let him.

The real question is, "Can it be?" And the answer is yes. With the right ammount of money, and growth, anyone could possibly overtake the UFC in popularity. Especially with the mainstream getting more interested.
I like to think of hardcore MMA fans, like the Indy rock fans. It's only coo til everyone else likes it.

Both the IFL and Elite XC are public companies so they release their year end financials and the 2007 results are out. First up, the IFL with info breakdown by the www.mmapayout.com. Second will be Elite XC with the breakdown by The Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
IFL-
21.3 million lost in 2007 and total of 31 million lost since inception through the end of 2007.
Total revenue for the year was 5.7 million.
"As a result of our continued losses, our independent auditors have included an explanatory paragraph in our financial statements for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2007, expressing doubt as to our ability to continue as a going concern."
Elite XC-
27.5 million in losses for 2007 and 31.8 million in total losses since inception through 2007. The auditor who prepared the report said "Substantial doubt exists about our ability to continue as a going concern."
10.6 million in losses came due to the purchases of various small mma promotions.
4.5 million in revenue for the year from live shows with expenses of 9.6 million in event production costs plus 2.8 million in tv production costs.
Elite spent 3.5 million on their website and only brought in 68k from it.
The positive for 2008 is two big changes with one being the CBS deal the second being a change in cost/revenue from Showtime. In 2007 Elite had to pay production costs ranging from 30k-400k depending on the size of the show and got no money from showtime. In 2008 Showtime will pay Elite broadcasting fights fees ranging from 50k-500k for a major show (such as Shamrock/Cung Le). Also, Showtime will pay production costs.
The CBS deal is also a stock purchase plan whereby CBS has already bought 4 million dollars in Elite stock and will buy an additional 1 million in stock every time they broadcast a live event.
