I have an elliptical in the guest room and dumbbells and a bench down in the garage.

Yea, you're pretty much right. That was my experience too. If you HAVE to get something for the house, just get some dumbbells and a bench. They usually have some decent deals on them at Costco. They don't take up a lot of space and if you don't use them you're not out a ton of cash like you would be with a bowflex.

If you've ever checked out Body For Life, you'll see that the vast majority of exercises are just using dumbbells. It was pretty damn effective for me. I just wish I had stuck with it. I went from 210 to 180. Then I found a job that took up all my time and I'm back to 200.

Unless you have someone motivated (me) to work out with. We work out in my BIL's garage and I tend to push him when he wants to quit.

But by yourself? Yeah, no go.

And those bowflex/resistant machines suck. That is what we started out on and they are no where near accurate and the ROM/weight introduction point sucks, i.e., you are 50% into your motion before you feel real resistance. It was creating a lot of sore joints.

Im going to agree...Unless you are REALLY motivated to change, you wont work out. Im going to suggest getting a chin up bar and an adjustable set of dumbells and do the p90x program. HOLY SHIT..its a hell of a workout. Check out youtube if you get bored, a lot of people have posted their results and done video blogs of their results. I was skeptical at first but just started it due to all the great results on youtube.

i disagree with you, ive lost close to 70lbs and have not stepped a foot into a gym. you just need to be ready to change your life. gym or no gym it can be done if you have your mind set to just do it.

As long as you have a couple of reliable workout partners working out at home can work.

Those type of people never last in the gym(long term aspect at least).
All partners do is give you an excuse to workout, or not to workout.

Super, happy for you. The other 99% of the world will fail with a home gym. Sad truth... couch > working out
