I love them and want one badly but no funds at the moment.

They're not horribly underpowered or anything?

You'll be just fine in traffic. After some minor mods you can still keep up with the 600's. I just liked the riding position.

It will take more than minor mods for an sv650 to keep up with 600s.

I mean stock 600s that are not fuel injected since he's looking at an older bike. They are great for the money. It came down to a SV or a YZF600 for me since I like to be comfortable since most commutes for me are 40+ miles each way.

Are they more of an upright sitting position bike? If so that would probably suit me better.

The newer ones are not bad (not sure when the body change was ~2003??).
The one I rode was M4's test bike, so it was modified but a fun little bike.

The SV's are great bikes with a huge cult following. Lots of guys road race them.
There's a big aftermarket of parts and upgrade stuff available. And they look pretty good. Lots of bike for the money.
They come in 3 flavors. Standard (naked), semi sport w/ a small failring and the Sport model w/ more fairing and lower bars.

Just went and rode it. The bike looks pretty clean. The owner works at a local Yamaha dealer and this is his personal bike. I talked him into throwing in a new helmet in the deal also. The bike has plenty of power for me and it seems smooth. It's been lowered a bit and the only thing that's been changed is the sprockets. The fork seals are leaking but he said he would have the Yamaha tech at his work replace them for free. Seems like a legit deal. This is the second time I've ever ridden a street bike and I barely got it to 50mph. It's kind of nerve racking but I'm sure the jitters will get better when I get more comfortable on the bike. Plus I need to get a license!! The only gay thing about the bike is that the wheels have been spray painted.

It was a toss up in comfort between the YZF600 and the Sv650s. I just figured that someone would steal the YZF before the Sv

I think the naked Sv's look better than the S models, but that isn't a BAD bike. It is carburated, and that's getting a little archaic these days. You can do some upgrades with used GSXR parts that make the bike handle like a true supersport. You can adapt GSXR forks, brakes, shocks, etc. They are neat bikes and I'd like to have one, but for a little more money and ten more MPG an inline 4 cylinder is the ticket imho.....

Haven 't ridden the 650, but the 03 SV1000S is a fun ride, light, good handling, good looks, really good lighting for night riding, and plenty of torque for an easy any gear you choose ride or power wheelies at 65mph, overall a fun bike. I'm told that other than the tl1000 twin it shares much if not most of its architecture with the 650.

I saw a guy on a black SV riding a wheelie from the stoplight at Greenville and 635 thru the intersection and down to Al Lambs Honda this morning (prolly a 1000). I think the new full faired SV650 is pretty decent looking.

Well look at you... getting into the street riding clan. Good choice at that price.

There's an '03 for $4800 on Craigslist. The guy offered me an even up trade however on my ZX6R that I was asking $4200 for, so it may be able to be purchased a little cheaper than $4800. He sent me pics and it appears to be in very good shape.

i've got a 2003 sv1000S and i fucking love it. Best bike i've ever owned. its not as fast as some of my previous bikes (gsxr1000, 750, etc) but man it handles great and has a ton of torque. i might put a tooth smaller front sprocket on just to get a little extra oomph down low but all in all it kicks ass. sounds great with pipes.
i bought my wife a 05 sv650 full fairing model back in the day and i rode it a little during the short time we owned it.. it wasnt bad, but felt slow compared to the bikes i normally rode. i'm sure if you were a new rider you'd love the sv650.
