This past week at the gym has been god awful - some people have zero common sense towards gym etiquette or what they're doing. After nearly getting a 100 lb facial, mystery slime on my hands, wiping down countless sweat drenched machines, seeing a pair of dumbbells broken in half, and leaving the gym twice out of sheer frustration because people weren't allowing me to work in, I've got to get a rant off my chest. Most of it is personal opinion while the rest are things I've taken up with the gym. Anyone else have things that people do at the gym that irritate them? I've started a list:
- Cell Phones: you're at the gym, leave it in your car, don't walk around the gym getting in peoples way talking on the phone (go to the lobby or outside if you must), doing free weight bench I nearly dropped a dumbbell on my face b/c this moron on the phone bumped it as I was pressing it out, which brings me to my next point . . .
- Spotters: if you can do the weight w/o a spot then great but if you can't for the love of god just "ask" for one, nothing worse than looking over to see someone flailing around w/ a barbell at their throat
- Not Wiping Down Equipment: sweat drenched benches are always fun to lay down on, bring a towel and use it, employees shouldn't let people in w/o them
- Not Returning Equipment: use a weight & put it back, it's simple enough, people shouldn't have to search for weights/bars/cable attachments or clear your weights off equipment after you use it
- Dropping or Slapping Weights: they're the reason for broken dumbbells and machines, we suffer not having machines available b/c they're dumbasses, obviously you're lifting too much if you can't put the weights down relatively easy, again employees need to address members that do this (whenever I say something people give me this fuck off look)
- Bar Clamps: use them, use them, use them! younger kid doing too much weight on straight bar curl w/ no clamps dumped his weight off one side as I walked by and the now empty end nearly took my jaw out on its way back up
- Poor Form: saw a guy acting like a badass putting up 315 on bench while arching the shit outa his back, people doing curls swinging the weight up, they're just wasting their time in the gym, proper form and less weight gives better results than poor form and high weight
- Washing Hands: can't stand seeing people walk out of the restroom w/o washing their hands and continuing their workout, nothing better than grabbing a weight and having mystery residue greet you
- Machine Hogs: not allowing anyone to work in and or sitting on the same damn machine for hours, this includes 4 dudes standing over one machine working out one after another
- Mirror Checking: you know, the guys that "constantly" look at themselves in the mirror flexing in different poses and such
- Eyeballing: dudes staring at other dudes while they workout, makes me lose concentration sometimes
- Screaming Grunts: let's let everyone know how strong you are and how much you're lifting by grunting loud enough for everyone to hear, I understand some grunting but shit sometimes it's a tad excessive
- Overweight Spandex Users: I mean c'mon, props to you for being in the gym in the first place but you could wear something a little less revealing for the rest of us to see if you're trying to work it off
- Underarmour (Underweight Spandex Users): unless you're a professional athlete, jacked, or wearing it "under" your workout clothes (as it's designed for) it shouldn't be worn at all
- Overtanning: especially the dudes with sunless tanning streaks, if you're white and look brown you might want to lay off for a while before your skin turns to cardboard
- Professional Spring Breakers: the ones that crowd the gym the month before break and disappear after - this includes during new years resolution time

If you're talking about some chump with his ass popping 2 feet off the bench then yeah, but there's a few people on here that would agree that arching the shit outa your back while benching *is* good form ;)

they arch it but they dont have it were the only thing on tha bed is the back of there shoulders and only having the balls of there feet on the ground.
i hate people doing super heavy weight squats and barely going down like 3 inches. hell i hate everything on squat if it isnt atg.
dudes that go to tha gym and just try and hit on chicks and not hit one weight.
people that only work there chest and biceps and think there as strong as a bear.
people that stare at u while working out then when u get off tha machine they try and ilift what u just did to see if there stronger than u
when doing cardio on the track fat fucks just walkin laps side by side yapping. and they make u stop everytime u try and pass by them.
i got plenty of these

its a gym...get over it. jesus, bunch of babies.
you are the type of person to complain that the air conditioning is not on, then a week later when its on, you complain its too cold. or that the steam room is too hot.
get your workout in, talk to who you want to talk to, then leave. its that simple.

"Underarmour (Underweight Spandex Users): unless you're a professional athlete, jacked, or wearing it "under" your workout clothes (as it's designed for) it shouldn't be worn at all"
LMAO, shit cracks me up. I've seen a few guys at 24hr fitness wearing Underarmour...one was WAAAAY Overweight and the other guy I saw was WAAAY too skinny his shirt was baggy!
On the bench you should arch your back but your ass should never leave the bench.
I was spotting a guy a couple of weeks ago that got at least four inches of air under his ass while bouncing the weight up. I don't say anything to people because it isn't really my business but I was sitting there thinking "Damn, hello back surgery".

since when did putting up 315 make you abad ass?
What bothers you so much about people wearing under armor? I don't wear it when I lift weights but I know they do soak up sweat pretty good. I just know I don't give a shit what other people are wearing as long as they aren't bothering me. Get over it.

YEt another reason i am glad that I have a really nice, not crowded gym at work. 24 Hour and LA fitness are full of douchbags like this.
I think this was one of the best rants ever on DFWStangs.
I am 6'1" and 192lbs. I am in shape but not strong at all. I maxed one time on bench at 225:) Got a small beer gut, but I work out properly and keep good form. I don't need some 5'7" dude who benches 350 to stare me down like he's the man at the gym while I am there just to get a work out in.

grayhorse - i do agree some arch is fine but when yur ass comes off the bench you might as well be doing decline
that is my el camino - i get distracted when people eyeball me when im lifting not the other way around
cammin4v - im def not that type of person and rarely ever complain, just this one time w/ this one instance, trust me im over it, its just a rant
white lightning - benching 315 doesnt make you a badass, im referring to acting like a badass circling the bench like a vulture with your chest pushed out to do 2 reps w/ a hefty spot
deso - nothing against underarmour, great stuff just ridiculous when people wear it as a tshirt or 4 sizes too small, not that big a deal just something i mentioned
stangin - im a pussy? c'mon now you can't be serious, one rant about the gym and i dont belong there? everyone has things about the gym that bother them, just sharing my frustration, nothing more nothing less

Some of these things I can see as legitimate complaints. Even though never considered or does it exist- a little common courtesy would be nice. I don't pay a god damned fee to feel like I'm working out in someone's basement.

I just don't understand why the gym is so dirty. For a place where people are all there to better their health, it's strange that things stay so dirty. The restrooms are almost as bad as amusement parks/walmart restrooms.

I look at people at the gym to see if I am doing it right or wrong, is that bad?
I have learned quit a bit from people I don't even know.
When I see a person with the type of arms, quads...
I see what they do and try to do it myself.

Word. I don't make it a habit of wearing it either but why the hate? I've seen people where fucking denim shorts, leather shoes, and a t-shirt when lifting....I thought they looked like morons but I could really care less.

I never wipe down the bench, dont really care if anyone else does either. I guess I am a jerk, after all it is a gym not a doctors office. The not putting up weights really pisses me off as well, or load up a barbell and use it then just leave the whole damn thing on the ground in front of the Smith machine. I bust people out on that though. I would have to second the cell phone thing also and not letting anyone else work in by stitting on the machine.

As far as the new years eve and spring break people go...who cares? If they pay, they have a right to be there. I'll add a couple though.
- If you can read a book while working out...you're not working out.
-Don't practice martial arts in the weight room where people are walking by. There is a basketball court, usually which is empty or close to it, or an aerobic room that's also usually empty. Saw a girl almost get roundhoused upside the head the other day because some guy randomly would throw kicks and punches.
-Yes, I see the hot girl across the room. I have eyes. You don't have to point her out then smile at me.
-Don't walk on the treadmill at 2mph for an hour. Someone else could actually get some use out of it.

Yup my worst one is when people put a shit load of weight and then have horrible form and then walk out of the gym like they are giants! Well all i can say is at least they are in the gym unlike others.... Oh and i also hate the guys who live in the gym and stayon the one machine for hours or look at you funny because you dont bench 500 lbs!

Gotta love the three friends in there doing leg press tonight, all three of them sprawled out on the only three leg sleds in the gym. It wouldn't be as bad if they were actually moving some weight, and pushing themselves, but they were essentially just sitting there like they were in the lounge chair store, just gabbing away. Get off your lazy ass and make your friend do some reps. I finally said "fuck it", and finished 4 sets of hack squats, and they were still sitting there when I moved on to leg extensions.

The only one that really bothers me is when people refuse to rack their weights. It was a whole lot worse when I used to work out at the YMCA. It's a little better now that I am at Huguley. But it never fails when I go to use the cables, there are 5-10 attachments laying around the floor. I usually end up racking most of the shit that other people leave. One of the trainers thanks me every night for racking the weights. I guess it's not a common thing for him to see anymore.
