So I'm taking off from work Tuesday and Wednesday for the motorcycle basic rider course next week through texasmtc.com. I've never ridden so this should be interesting.
I also got my pre-approval for a bike. I'll probably be looking around for a used sportsbike this weekend. I'm now in the market for a 600cc crotchrocket (honda and yahama are at the top of my list). I want used for my first bike. Something around 4k or less.

no, just keep your wits about you and don't be stupid. no wheelies on city streets, and leave the stunting to the guys that don't care about themselves. if you want to stunt, get a bike that has already been abused, and find an area that is litely populated.

That is awesome momo. I did this same thing almost 5 years ago. I always wanted to learn to ride. I had only rode dirt bikes and nothing with a clutch. Me and two buds took the class together. It was so much fun. Then all you have to do is take the test at the DMV and you get your license.
I then bought a cruiser for my first bike. I still wanted a crotch rocket and eventually bought an 03 R6. It was the best 600cc sport bike. I loved that bike. I have since had three 1000cc bikes and have never looked back.
Good luck in the class and stay safe. These new 600cc bikes are crazy fast. My brother ran a low ten second quarter mile at 130+MPH on the nearly stock 03 R6. They are no slouches.

I got my first sportbike at 18, a then 3 yr old F3. Those bikes were very newb friendly, yet still capable. I feel like I've got a lot more self control than most people (especially at that age when compared to my peers) yet I still ripped it A LOT. In the first year of riding the bike got knocked over in a parking lot, I lowsided it twice, and not too long after I was in a hit and run that I feel I could have avoided if I was more experienced at the time.
Before you buy the bike go buy a Shoei or Arai helmet, some good leather gloves, and a quality leather jacket. It wouldn't be a bad idea to get some riding boots and some kind of leg armor you can wear under year jeans. Shit, two piece leathers aren't a bad idea, but no one on this board will do that, well, except me ;)

i tell customers that come in for a new bike, to have $1000.00 for gear. thats going high and with good stuff. like an arai or shoei helmet, rocket jacket and gloves and boots(not as important to me).
sounds crazy but a good entry level helmet is in the 400-600 dollar range and a jkt will be around 200.00 and gloves are around 50.00 then add tax.
then theres a little extra cash for parts that some people want, if you are getting a sportbike
1. frame sliders
1a. if its a yamaha sportbike get the clutch cover slider also(costs around 80 but will save you over a 100 if you dont have this.)
2. if you live in an apartment get an alarm(a good one)
3. turnsignals
4. rear turnsignal intergrator
5. get the tire warranty, it will save you money in the long run, to many customers come in and dont have the warranty then bitch about tire prices.

its not that they are bad but shoei and arai are that much better of a helmet, alot of r+d go into them, 80% hand made, lighter, better quality.

Agreed, I've bought most of my stuff online and saved quite a bit of money. I'll also never go back to a "cheap" helmet. My current two are Arai and Suomy, excellent air flow and comfort (just make sure to get a helmet that fits your head as not everybody's is shaped the same).

No excuses. It's certainly a confidence booster for learning how to handle tight corners and panic breaking.

So by taking the class you no longer have to even take the written test at the DPS? I knew you could bypass the riding portion but thought you still had to take the written.

Personally, I didn't care for the RF-1000 that I had. I'm not sure what the problem was but it just seemed like it had excessive amounts of wind noise. I got a Suomy now and like it much better.

Yeah...I tried on the Suomy and Arai helmets and the Shoei seemed to fit me best...I usually ride with headphones (still can hear everything) and that deadens most of the wind noise.

Oh I agree... The Shoei was great with headphones. I mean it still had wind noise but obviously the headphones would drowned it out. On the other hand, without headphones the damn thing was unbearable. The Suomy is quiet without head phones but is slightly uncomfortable when I wear them. I guess its all about personal preference.

Arai isnt the only thing out there, and 400-600 will get you a top of the line helmet, not entry level. The top end Shoei and Arai are just over 600. You can get a Scorpion which seems popular for half that. You can get a nice Fieldsheer leather jacket from Grif's for $199, or a mesh one for summer for $99. Gloves are $60ish, boots you can get any comfortable leather ones, Sidi or AStar isnt necessary. So IMO $1000 for gear is bullshit. You can get a nice setup for $600 quite easily and it will save your ass in a wreck w/o an issue.

I have had them all. my last was a HJC and it took a header into the road at about 50mph.......with my head inside of it. Helmet took a beating but my head was nice and safe. So with the insurance money I bought another exactly like the last. and for $80 you cant beat it!

I had an HJC for years and it held up fine when I went down. Thats the only reason I replaced it. Honestly the only thing wrong with that HJC were the vents wore out over time and didnt work quite right.

Yeah my HJC was loud, but IMO Arais are too. Shoei is the quietest I've worn, but at 3x the price of my HJC the payoff is a toss up.
I love my X-11 now and wouldnt trade it for the world. But for someone just getting into riding who isnt completely in love with it I'm sure would have a hard time spending almost $700 on a helmet that is just marginally quieter than an HJC or Scorpion

Getting a little off subject here (new thread??) but I loved my HJC (AC-12?) enough that after selling my first one I went and bought a second one for a spare a few months later. Very nice helmet for the price. But damn the venting on that thing sucked. The times I wore it on a summer ride I was cooking underneath the lid, even on the highway I'd find myself cracking open the shield a little to get some airflow. I'd really like to try the newer Carbon helmets to see how they've improved but I really like my current (2 of them) Suomy helmets and my Arai RX-7.

Be careful out there on the streets !
The 'cagers' don't see you !
NEVER assume they do.
Always have an escape route in mind.
Watch your '6' o'clock at stop lights.
Stop so you can move out of the way if some cager forgets to stop
Be ready for the unexpected.
A little fender-bender for a car can ruin your body & life (not to mention total the bike)
With that said.....Have fun with your new bike !!!

Well I took my MSF course tuesday and wednesday. I passed and got my class M license yesterday. I'm glad I took the course. I learned a lot and feel pretty comfortable on a bike. I know whatever bike I get I will need to spend a week in a parking lot getting used to everything before I start commuting daily.
I have an offer out on a bike right now and I'm taking a look at a few others this week.
Does anyone have any feedback on the 04/05 triumph 600/650 daytonas?

I have, they just don't fit my head quite right (although this is going back maybe 4-5 years now). The Arai Signet and RX7 fit my head perfectly. The Suomy is unmatched for comfort and I really dig there graphics.
I have the Extreme Dragon Helmet which I always get complements on.

hey momo is the test/class hard? im taking mine next weekend. i was just wondering if you had any advice you could give before i go.
thanks
no, it's not hard at all. just pay attention and do your best. its all about you learning and your safety, not about pass or fail.
the 2 major areas tested are:
#1. stopping. (emergency stopping using both brakes, pressing in clutch and downshifting into first at the same time) this was my best area. i always nailed this one.
#2. cornering. most of the class time focuses on taking corners since thats where the majority of bike crashes result. head up, look where you are turning, not straight and turn by pressing in the direction you want to turn. if you can do that you can swerve which is another test.
the only test i did bad on was the u turn. that's hard for me and ill spend some more time on it when i get my bike. its not worth very many points though.

I did mine on a little Honda Rebel 250 and I really dig that bike. Light and very maneuverable, probably gets awesome gas mileage to.

What did you think of it? If I could find one for a good deal I'd probably buy it for running errands :)
