Yeah, I sure thought about that one. I figured I'd start it off in the 20th century, since there are so many to choose from. Great movie.

Hahah, we agree on a few things then Hollywood. ;)

Troy is bad ass for sure, and I recommend Sgt. York for a good WWI movie. It's been years since I've seen it, but I remember digging the hell out of it.

The Great Escape is awesome. Whats really cool is looking at some of the websites devoted to that movie. Seeing the way those tunnels were built.

Three Kings has gotta be one of the worst war movies ever. I don't know if you can classify The Manchurian Candidate as a war movie, but the remake with Denzel Washington is a great movie. Also, Glory, the Patriot and Saving Private Ryan are awesome as well.

Too bad we can't piece all of these movies into one.

Start with the boot camp of Full Metal Jacket.
The beach scene of Saving private ryan
The fighting in Hamburger hill.
The ending from Apocolypse now.

Other decent flicks that are a bit dated include
WWI - "The Blue Max"
WWII - "Midway" and "The Big Red One"

I'm not so sure I would qualify that as a "war movie". Cold War Techno-thriller something or other, but not so much a war movie.

But that does remind me of some not-so conventional war movies like Red Dawn and Rambo First Blood that were pretty great.

Cold War - Hunt for Red October. Not necessarily a "war" movie per say, but a damn good flick.

How about "Starship Troopers" for future war? Ok, it sucked but that Dina Meyer chick (Dizzy) is hot.

One I didn't see mention was a Vietnam war flick called The Siege of Firebase Gloria (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098328/) staring R. Lee Ermey and Wings Hauser. Not available on DVD but I bought a copy on eBay (definitely a VHS dub but it's watchable) a while back just to have it handy. Good R. Lee Ermey flick with some killer lines like "The people were friendly. We liked them and they liked us... so it really hurt us to see their heads on stakes."

In addition to what's been mentioned: Apocalypse Now (nothing like the smell of napalm in the morning), Braveheart, Patton, The Bridge on the River Kwai, Stalag 17, Thin Red Line, All Quiet on the Western Front, The Longest Day, Midway, Gladiator, & Rambo (even though I don't quite know where they'd fit in)

There were TONS of WWII movies that were made DURING WWII. So you fail at listing those. :D

Also, Catch-22 is set in WWII but made much later, and was a very weird, deep film. Over half of the B-25 bombers flying today were restored to flying condition for that movie.
