Eh sounds like they want $$$
If the screen went black entirely it may just be an issue with the cable. I don't know much about apple POS's but in older dell laptops the cable would come lose sometimes. Youd have to pop open the area above the keyboard and reseat it. But I have no idea what the apple laptops look like internally.
if it's an LCD replacement, you're better off buying a new computer...oh wait, it's a Mac, so it's still cheaper to replace the screen!
but in all seriousness, an LCD replacement is going to run you $300-$500 and probably even more knowing Apple's knack for raping people out the ass on repairs. Have fun.

Don't forget it could be an inverter board. .. extremely cheaper than a new screen OR new computer.
If she wants a new computer, tell her ass to learn how to use a pc.

Since it's just black, that's a distinct possibility, but the problem is in the actual repair; if she sends it off to Apple for service, I can almost guaruntee that they will say LCD replacement. I absolutely hate Apple's product service centers.
