View Full Version : How many times can you...

...bench press 185lbs. My brother was at this football combine a couple months ago and some highschool freshmen benched 185lbs, 50 times before they made him stop. That shit was insane. I can only do 135lbs, 30 times. The parents swear up and down he's not on roids or even any supplements.

Just wondering if the hardcore lifters on here could do anything close to that.

I'm maxing around 300lbs right now, I'd say I could do 185 about 15-20 reps.

He was from Arkansas. It was a combine held at Texas Stadium, I wanna say early March. Why would I have a picture of the kid? Maybe THAT would get your dixie wrecked.

either way it still wouldnt be 12". hes got to be on something. Fred is no small fool. and he doesnt think he can do it. Where's feldman?

Its all about how you train, I dont train for reps so I don't think 50 is a real number for me but it is very attainable with some effort. To max out at your body weight and then go for reps is a quality way to get pure fuctional strength if your into climbing or gymnastics.

It was his mom claiming that he wasn't on anything so who knows. Some dude behind my dad made a joke..."At least they're not short of steroids in Arkansas", not knowing the mom was behind him. She got pissed.

Just 'cause mommy and daddy think their little angel doesn't do "drugs" doesn't mean he's clean. I have no doubt that Dave could rep 185 like that, but he certainly couldn't back in highschool. There are some "corn fed" big boys out there though, so I s'pose he could be one of them.

Jake Long did 37 reps of 225 at the combine, and that is supposed to be pretty fucking impressive. Most were in the mid 20's, and they are going to the NFL, and out of college. I don't know how that relates to 185 50 times, but I think you can draw some sort of conclusion from the comparison.

I have heard and some of the kids that we train(combine specific, speed, strength agility) actually saw the kid. If he lives up to the hype he is a beast. They did make him stop at 50 or something like that. Everyone there was in disbelief. He has been to a couple of more combines around the area.

On a side note I did 225x21 last week. I don't know what that translates to in 185. Last time I did that I think it was 29 or something like that.

I don't do a lot of barbell BP, but how about a set of 40-50 reps of 80lb dumbbells in each hand?
That should equate to about the same amount of weight to anyone who has trained before.
Then again, I'm 250+lbs and not in high school, so therefore you won't be nearly as impressed.
That is my point.

Ask around to those that know me and understand how I am.
I'm not a talker, a wisher, nor a liar.

I just claimed the feat isn't all that great.
Now for a high schooler, yes it is a very good feat to overcome.
But in general, big deal!
I'm not going to get into what I workout with or how weak I am, but if you want to wager,
let me know and I will honestly make you a video of 80lb dumbbells for a set of 40-50.

lol! clearly some one needs to teach that kid what bench press is.
(1) letting it DROP from full height uncontrolled is not part of it
(2) bouncing it off your rib cages is not part of it
(3) using your back is not part of it..

thats some bullshit right there...

i AM impressed at the amount of punishment his ribcage can take though from pounding his chest with it.

x2,

If this kid is bouncing, then he isn't doing anything than being a barbell trampoline, which doesn't equate to strength in my book.

Yep. I don't know you though...I don't think. Name? I remember Bobby (93powerranger) and he was pretty stacked in HS, but I know a lot of people were juicing then too since it was a year or two before all those kids at colleyville got caught and testing started.

Apparently the kid was freakishly jacked. As far as weight...I don't know. I don't know. My dad was the one telling me about this kid. He said the kid was a freaking monster. Not just some big corn-fed hillbilly.

I convinced my partner(210lb guy) to give it a whirl with me today!
Keep in mind we just did chest on Monday(and we go pretty heavy, not none of this crap).
I did bust out a set of 50 reps, but were they perfect? Honestly, No.
I started to tire out and I have long arms, and I felt like I was not going down far enough(due to fatigue and speed from it burning like hell).
My partner(benches 365lbs, no shirt crap) put them up 40 times.
So I guess we both win, lol.

Yea, that thread is what introduced me to the dfwstangs douchebag mentality.

When my max was 405x3 I used to workout with 225 a every couple of months. I would do a set of 225x8, then a set of 225x25, and then a set of 225 with a 2 second hold until I couldn't do it anymore (usually about 6). Keep in mind, the 25 were not slow and steady, but rather quick. I tried to be sure to keep good form and lower the weight, not drop it, but I was doing it quickly enough that I'm sure my form suffered.

Josh, I am actually right around 205 now body fat is close to 10-12 %. I actually know what I am doing now days compared to back then when we just tore our bodies up because of Coach Caraway, I work at a sports training facility and the owner/boss is one step ahead of the game and I just get every bit of knowledge from him I can. I am not saying I know it all, but definitely ALOT more than 5-6 years ago.Soon we are going to be Crossfit certified and I will be getting my cert as well those are some freaking awesome work outs and cant wait to incorporate all of them as well.

It's possible, look at some of the high school powerlifting records. If the kids weighs 300 lbs. and is a freshman it isn't going to be too hard to push 185 like it is nothing with just a couple of months of training.
