I've ridden some scooters and moto bikes when i was like 16....sooooo being 12 years ago and nothing like a street bike im wondering.....

What is the realistic cost of a decent learner bike? Think I can get a decent one for around 2 grand(not including protective gear cost)?

I was looking on ebay and a lot seem pretty expensive especially if its a first bike and I'm sure it'll end up dropped at some point or another. Any suggestions on best places to find one?

I'm signed up for a bike class weekend as well.

PS: Man I'm drooling over that 2008 GSXR and its color schemes...but no way i'm jumping into something like that just to drop it.

for 2 grand you would end up with a real old bike, or a clunker. you could probably find a 99+ 600 around 3 grand.

Cool ill just save up a bit more then and go for that.
I've always liked the r6's so we'll see! maybe that tax stimulus check will help...lol....
I can't even tell where mine is, the damn IRS site says no info available for me!

YZF R6 is a tight, budget minded beginner 600 (if there's such a thing as a beginner 600)

I'm thinking very very very hard about a Gixxer 750 in met. orange/black right now.

There are 2 kind of riders.

1.The ones who have dropped their bikes

2.The ones who will.

Mine was 2 weeks ago, at 10 mph turning in gravel at night

Thankyou frame sliders!!!

Get frame sliders/steering damper ASAP if you buy one of those as your first....

I've said it a hundred times to many people who ask the same questions:

Don't buy a super nice brand new sportbike as a first bike to learn on.

YOU WILL DROP IT...whether its in your garage, a gas station parking lot, sitting at a stop light, or carving a corner. Dropping a bike doesnt necessarily mean you plowed into something or wiped out. My point is it will inevitably get a few scratches, nicks, dings, or cracked/broken parts due to you not being the best rider in the world. You will want to vent your anger the first time you put scratches/rash on your brand new 8 or 9 thousand dollar bike and you will feel really stupid for not buying a used 3 thousand dollar bike to learn on.
3500 can get you a lot of bike IF you don't go in looking for a 1 year old R6.
You could find an 00-03 R6, GSXR600, F4i, or ZX6R for around that price and spend the rest on a GOOD helmet, some gloves, a good jacket, some boots, and a few other add-ons if you wanted.

I got my CBR 600 F2 for 1100 bucks , four years ago. I put 400 dollars into it, ceramic coated headers, led lights , misc
so for 1500 bucks I have ridden a bike for 4 years ,now on my 5th rear tire and 3rd front.
dropped it numerous times , but mines a naked bike with frame sliders so no problem.
Mainly doing some stoppies that came down pretty hard.
a couple times moving the bike around.
And even a couple times my druck ass brother gets on it (parked)

F2/F3's are great learning bikes as are F4's.
All have decent power, and won't cost you a fortune.
If your into plastics then it's just going to cost you . I would rather ride, with what little time i get for it.
In the last 4 years I can't even count how much money I've seen people I know lose in bikes for one reason or another.

but it's not much or a price difference to a 1K?? so what's the hold up there? buy the 1K and keep it in C mode.

I've been riding for awhile and still want one of the new 600's. but, I'm waiting till freestyle or someone else has a cage available for it so the wife can learn on it without banging it up.

And newbies get pissed off or offended every time they ask when I give them the same answer. Guess someone whos been there done that...and knows 20 other people who have been there done that wouldn't know what they're talkin about  Some people just MUST learn from their own experience.

'08 GSXR 600. I really like those new 600's and the wife wants to be able to ride. so, I figure get one of those and she can ride it when I'm not. :D just read a review about the '08 600 and they said C mode on it (since it has the tri-mode) is pointless and has absolutely no power, so I say that's perfect for a beginner. but, I wouldn't want a new rider on a new bike without the bike having protection, so I've been looking for a full stunt cage for it just in case. if anyone sees anything let me know.

and that's why you buy a cage for that bike. ;) not just freakin sliders, a full cage.
