the shoei would be nice if all you're doing is racing. for street use I'd go with icon for the better air flow and lighter helmet. you'll be able to get the Domain Decay a lot cheaper than the Domain 2 Mechanica because the Mechanica is a brand new helmet for this year. But, the Icon Mechanica helmet does come with the chrome shield plus the clear shield and the Decay helmet doesn't.
Have you checked out the new Icon Airframe helmets? More ventilated than the Domain and made of carbon fiber/dyneema composite, so it's light.
if you got pockets deep enough for the Shoei/Arai etc.. then dont fuck around get the good stuff, your protecting your head. I do personally like the Icon's but like I said...

like you said, what? spending more money on a helmet doesn't mean it's protecting you better. like said many times before, a cheap ass zr-1 helmet has better safety ratings than any $600 helmet.

I'd go with 1 or 2

I always thought the icons felt cheap...a buddy of mine had the mainframe (i think) and the paint started to peel/chip real quick from just everyday riding. All their shit feels cheap to me.

i like the third one but Craizie's testament to the cheapness is pretty much the only thing i have ever heard about icon helmets.

X2 every Icon product that I have purchased has been crap. I love my shoei helmet.

What about the difference in comfort and weight. The Icons fit me well but most of the people that have Shoei/Arai dont go back to cheaper helmets because of the weight etc... If you haven't tried one then you should. And I remember the DOT/Snell tests, but for my point is if you can afford the best why not have it? You can trust your 80$ helmet and I will trust my HJC that I have, but if I had the cash for a Arai thats what I would get, they fit me best, keep down the helmet shake at high speeds and the light weight is very nice.

heres the way to look at
volvo= shoei and arai
ford pinto= everything else(pretty much)
which do you think is safer??
i have had 2 wrecks, one in a cheap kbc dirt helmet and barely hit my head on the object. I had a concusion. On a streetbike wearing a shoei the front brake locked up and highsided me at @20 mph(which equals about 60mph when my head hit the ground). The helmet took all the abuse and i walked away with scratched knees and a broke thumb. No head trauma with the shoei.
I'll never wear a cheap hemlet again.

A car made a u-turn in front of me while I was going 55ish. I barely hit them, hit the ground, slid head long into a curb perpendicular to my direction of travel. In the police report (cop witnessed my air time) it says I bounced 10-12 feet in the air after striking the curb with my head and traveled 35 feet while airborne. I did get knocked out, but there were no severe head injuries. I was wearing a Shoei.
Maybe a better testament to how good an Arai is...a friend of mine was killed when he t-boned an SUV at 85mph. He had severe injuries all over but did not have any brain injuries. He did break his nose. The docs at the hospital think his helmet was forced down on impact and that the forehead area came down and broke his nose. Internal injuries killed him, his head/brain were fine. The helmet looked pretty ruff afterwards, but it basically remained in one solid piece.
I dated a girl whose brother was killed in a motorcycle accident. He had no broken bones or internal injuries, but head trauma killed him. He was wearing some off brand helmet and it split in two upon initial impact. The liner and face shield were the only things holding it together.
These examples are far from scientific, but I'll stick with Shoei/Arai. It's not like there is that much in difference in the price when you consider what hangs in the balance.

I could give a shit what the helmet looks like, but when I get a bike, I will buy the best helmet there is. Judging from the testaments above, looks like it'll be Shoei/Arai. How cool your helmet looks doesn't mean shit, if your head is mush inside of it when you go down....just my .02

buddy of mine has a Shoei X-11, and I hate the way it fits. Also is kinda noisey and I felt the same way with the RF-11.

the x-11 is the racing helmet light weight and really good airflow, the rf1000 is their daily consumer helmet still light and great airflow but less noisy, besides that YOU ARE ON A MOTORCYCLE does it really matter if its noisy. Wear some earplugs. If the shoei doesnt fit then there is gonna be an Arai that will.
btw what the hell is a rf-11??? never heard of one!

icon isnt bad per-say, i mean its better than nothing, but if you have the money buy the best you can afford. again shoei and arai are what you pay for...... high quality, good looking and high reputable. plus they are 80% hand made and inspected hardcore for flaws(cosmetic and safety wise)

exactly, the arai fits my head shape the shoei does not, i do not remember which one is which but one suits a round head better and the other suits a more melon type of head shape where as the head is longer front to back than side to side.

read above post and try different helmets dude, they are not made one for all, well they are but like I said above some are made for different head shapes, and you can always replace your cheek pads to tighten up the fit etc...
