My pool has been messed up latley and iv been waiting on a new impeller for my pump. Since the pool pumps have been off for over a month my electric bill went from $280 down to $130. Iv got 1 2hp main pump and 1 booster pump for the cleaner.

that sounds about right. I had a 500 dollar electric bill last year. I'm trying to avoid that this year with ceiling fans and sweat. Do you have a green swamp in the back yard?

my bill only went up about 30.00-40.00 dollars when we had our pool put in last year.

Mine averages about 3-400/ month.

Mine averages about 3-400/ month.

I'm around 250 in the winter months when I'm running the pump 5 or 6 hours a day. When I have to go 8-10 hours a day it spikes up dramatically. I have a 2hp Hayward that's a couple of years old for an 18K gallon pool. Having to run a booster for the cleaner suck$

To be fair, the last two months have been VERY mild. I wouldn't attribute that full amount to the pumps...My usual bill fell $100 from Feb to March, and I don't have a pool.

Mine is $2.16 a month and it's salt water. 24 hour fitness long term contract:)

Everyone expect to pay at least 50 % more for your electric bill this summer than last. Maybe even more.

yes, the question should be more geared towards KW hrs used. Some of us may be using 3rd party energy service and $ per KWhr could vary.

I ran my pool pump manually. Usually every other day or two unless we had rain or had treated it. I doubt it alone added $75/mo to my bill using Direct Energy.

IMO, running the pool pump every day during the season for 8, 10, or 12 hr cycles is probably excessive and could be scaled back with little impact to most pools.

Energy prices per kw/h are going to be pretty close accross the board and they will go up this year with Direct. Trust me.

I don't run mine nearly that much. Maybe 6hrs/wk and it's clean and well filtered.

It might be costing me $25-30 per month.

Exactly my point. Dont buy in to the "you need to run your pool pump daily during the season". You will have a clean pool but you can reduce the cycle and still have a clean and healthy pool to swim in.

True, none of the alternative providers offer you much in the way of discounts these days but KWh used more accurately quantifies the question of demand.

And yes, if Direct goes up they will be aligned with the market or they will no longer be in business. We are on a co-op at our new home and there are no alternative providers in this area.

I never ran my 2 speed 2 hp pump more than 6 hours a day and to reduce it would just take a little more chlorine and conditioner. I also used a DC cleaner ( Smartpool Dolphin and that would filter it as well and did not require the booster pump so it ran cheaper.

One way to help keep your pool clean is to keep the P out of pool and limit the idiots with sunscreen going in that washes off. White ribbon Streamers don't help either.

Pool size, pump size, filter size all play into that equation. You're very lucky if you can go every other day and maintain clear water. The impeller on my pump was obstruted and the pump didn't run one day. The water did not look good at all the next day with fine particles floating on the top.

x2. its rediculous to run your pump non-stop and keep up on cleaning.

For you guys that aren't running the pumps daily, how fo you sanitize the pool? Any kind of inline chlorinator?

For you guys that aren't running the pumps daily, how fo you sanitize the pool? Any kind of inline chlorinator? What do you mean? You add chlorine, let the pump run for a few hours, shut it off.

I use shock and a floating dispenser for the tabs.

yikes... pools are just too damn expensive..

Its interesting to hear a few of you guys only run the pump every few days

that's what I was talking about -- how do you chlorinate. Some poeple have chlorinating systems that don't work if the pump's not running. It wouldn't be practical for them to use the pump every other day. Drastically reducing pump run time and manually chlorinating might be options for reduced electricity costs.

Thats how I do it - use broadcast granular shock. I used to put it down the skimmer but now just broadcast directly into the pool. Maybe use a packet a week during the season, I run the pump every 2-3 days running the Kreepy Krauley to sweep the surface.

My pool is a diving pool and is prob 20k gals or more, 8ft in the deep end, 32ft long.

My pool will have all the water clean within 2hrs of a normal sweep down. I'm not sure what will be gained by running it another half day.

do you test the water regularly? weekly? If the chemicals are fine and you're not having algae issues - keep on keeping on. I know I'd have problems if I did that. I'm in Houston with 90 degree temps and 90% humidity. The pool get's full son for all but about 2 hours a day.

I run mine at night, turn it on before we hit the sack, off in the morning so about 8 hrs per cycle, maybe 16-24 hrs a week then depending on use.

Of course during the off season, I decrease cycles substantially ;)

Yeah I thought about throwing some catfish in there just so it will at least be serving a purpose. Whats funny is Google earth has updated and you can tell my pool is messed up compared to my negihbors.
