another question i have. I have some of these red tip photinia in my backyard against a fence to give us a little more privacy. We planted them about 3-4 years ago and they have finally grown up to be about 6" above the fence line.

the big hail storm came a couple weeks ago and tore them up, they lost about half their leaves. Now they just look like crap, and my neighbor said they have "black spot" and are going to die...

anyone know much about these? is there anything i can do to save them?

My entire back fence line is done with those and they are roughly 15 ft tall which is great for privacy and a bit of a sound barrier. Last year one got a fungus which spreads FAST to the others and will kill them in just a few days.

I asked someone about it and they recomended using a sprayer that attaches to your water hose, put in 1/3 dawn dishwashing liquid, 1/3 baking soda and 1/3 water, mix throughly then attached to garden hose and start at the top of each bush and work your way down.

This washes all of the fungus off of the leaves which will stop it from spreading and may save the one that is infected now.

Hope this helps

Neil Sperry, North Texas yard/gardening guru doesn't recommend them.

Too many problems with them.

I had 6, down to 1.

They must be well drained.

We had 12 along our back fence line and they grew out of control. The more I trimmed the quicker they grew.

I hated them and gttingthem out required more than just round up.

Wax myrtles make pretty privacy shrubs.
