im coming up for an upgrade on my cell at the end of this month with AT&T. i am looking to get a phone that is 3G capable, and on that i can tether with my PC for my internet. im doing that now with my L2, but it is slow as hell, and it isn't 3G capable. what are you guys' opinions of what phone to get to use for this purpose? im thinking a new gen RAZR, but don't know. my dad got his wife a Blackberry and he says it is an awesome phone.

I have a blackberry for work and they suck ! The old razor's had problems with the batteries. Not sure if the new ones do. If you have the cash I would wait until june and get the new Iphone that is coming out.

i can't afford to buy an iPhone. if someone has one around here that wants to trade it for something, i might be able to do that. other then that, i will have wait till i can upgrade my phone and get one that way

I'm pretty sure the current iPhone can't be tethered. And even if it can be it's not 3g. Blackberries are good if need email all the time, other than that I'm not sure.

i love my BB. but no, it doesn't work off 3G. it only works on edge.
after a quick browse...

that one doesn't look too bad.

I keep seeing this thread title thinking it says:

i'm not sure you can teather through BT. i mean, i'm sure someone has done it, but you know.
as far as samsung and nokia, yes, there are programs. but it's the cable that'll kill you. i know the samsung cable (if purchased from an ATT store will run about $80) i don't remember that one website, but i'm sure you can get them on there.
but i'd say, if you're already familiar with phonetools, then just get the new V9 or something.

not sure what BT is, but yes, i am familiar with phone tools. i guess i will just have to wait and see where the new V9's are at come the end of the month. nevermind about the V9, that is a pricey phone. i would prolly look more at the V3xx
anyone have one of these, or know anything about them

if i went with that phone, i would have to look into a refurb

i just thought, motorola phone tools has a way to connect to your phone with Bluetooth. how much would that degrade the signal/internet connection using that option? if it's not bad, i could just get a bluetooth adapter and connect that way instead of the USB cable

BT = bluetooth. ;)
the motoQ if i'm correct runs off WM. (Windows Mobile)
now, i personally, despise windows mobile. it's not very user friendly.
and if the phone tools has that option, go for it. all you would need is a USB adapter. the V3xx is a decent phone. both my parents and brother have it. i don't know how reliable the battery is though. especially while being used so heavily. that would be another plus to using a USB cable. It charges while using it. :)

Sounds like user error.
Running WM6 on my phone, modding the shit out of it, and love it.
But, i guess if you need a dumbed down phone, they've got those out there too.

i can't afford a $200 phone, but, a free or $50 phone would be about right. i really want/need the phone to be 3G capable(if im paying $60 a month for the net, i want to use it to the max), with BT, and would like a camera. i would prefer it to be a Motorola as i have the phone tools and the cable. i have almost a month to figure out what to get.

Might be a little bit difficult to get that out of a $50 phone.
Any chance of signing on with a new provider and getting some decent discounts?

well, there are plenty on the AT&T site that are really cheap with the 3G access.
the Motorola Q is $50 for a refurb unit. no chance of getting new service. im on my dad's plan right now. i will keep an eye on it and decide when it gets closer to the 27th
