Social Security for Illegals

So got into this discusion with my uncle about politics this weekend and he says that all three McCain, Obama and Clinton have included paying illegal's social security benefits as part of there social security reform. So since I do not have time to google this I knew someone on here would have the scoop for me. ;)

Romney, McCain And Social Security For Immigrants

Mitt Romney insists that John McCain supports giving Social Security benefits to illegal aliens. This time his claim does not depend on the definition of "saw," but on the definition of "illegals."

Romney's ad bringing up this issue states that McCain "even voted to allow illegals to collect Social Security."

Well, not really. McCain's position has long been, and still is, that anyone who paid into the Social Security system be able to get that money back -- provided the person is a legal resident. Immigrants who came here illegally would be unable to collect Social Security benefits if they remained illegals. Only if they become legal residents could they collect. That's what the bill he voted for would have done.

The question is: who collects the benefits? The answer is: ONLY LEGAL RESIDENTS. Under the proposals McCain has supported, no one who is here illegally can collect Social Security benefits. That means that Romney's assertion that McCain would "allow illegals to collect Social Security" is wrong. Because in order to collect, they have to BE LEGAL. By definition, then, under McCain's proposals illegals would NOT BE ALLOWED TO COLLECT SOCIAL SECURITY.

Legal residents who had previously been here illegally could collect what they contributed while here illegally. But that is not the same as letting illegals collect.
